Hi everyone,

We have decided on are summer holiday we are going to Nature and Camping les domes de miage St Gervais with Mont Blanc as our back drop.

We are going 3rd week of July for 2 weeks. We are going via the Euro Tunnel and driving down. I am after help with what time would you recommend the crossing and stop over points and route you would take. Should we avoid weekend travelling? It will be shared driving and we are apunto with roofbox, so our stop overs would have to be secure.

We have driven to Brittany before and we have all the kit required.

Any advice is most appreciated.

Your first stage to Folkestone is quite a drive from the NE probably about 6 to 7hrs with stops. So that will give you a start time from UK.

Through France about 560 miles to Chamonix area so half way would be around the Troyes area, lots of overnight hotels there on the ringroad. All this depends on what time you arrive in France.

Most of the cheapish hotel chains can be found on city ringroads and some even on autoroute junctions.

The fastest route I can give you is all on autoroute so tolls are payable. A26, A5, A31, A39 and A40

You've got a fair old trek!

We went that way last year using the Mont Blanc Tunnel to cross into Italy.

We always leave Sheffield around 1 am for a crossing at about 5:30am so we can guarantee no hold ups on the motorway on the way to the tunnel and an early start in France.

We did an overnight at the camping municipal in Beaune (arrived early afternoon) - a pleasant site with a supermarket nearby and a decent on-site restaurant / take away. If you go there I'd advise booking as it is a very popular stopover on the way south.

From Beaune to Mont Blanc was about a 3 / 3.5 hour drive.

You shouldn't hit too much traffic even on a weekend as Paris traffic going to the Med doesn't join the motorway until Beaune.

Thanks guys for your replies. We have had our booking confirmation from the campsite so french alps it is.

It has certainly taken the pressure off with there being so much choice! And which country to go to. But I feel we have definately made the right decision.

longcol I like your thinking of leaving during night. I know M25 quiet well and thats last place I want to be stuck on. But we are county durham along time driving. Im not bothered its exciting all the planning but hubs I need sleep! My thoughts are do as you did and push hard stopping at Troyes. I found an F1 to stop over night really cheap maybe to cheap! But on reflection of all miles we would have done maybe its a bit to ambitious.

I have done the route planners via Mitchelin done all costings, fuel, tolls, euro star, hotel and site fees comes in at £850. Have I missed anything out? Can only see cutting out the tolls would save about £100 but it adds 2-3 hours on journey each way!

Any thoughts most appreciated x

The only thing I would say is that the route planners always underestimate the time taken, so dont leave yourself tight for time. Also, your car is going to be pretty heavily loaded with a roofbox, so I would assume your fuel budget could well be 15% dearer than Via Michelin estimates.

I have driven from the NW to the Rhone Alps for the past three years with my family. Admittedly I am the only driver, and towing a large caravan but I do that in two and a half days.

A real tip is that there are no french trucks on the road on Sundays. I would ALWAYS schedule the majority of travel down through France on a Sunday. The roads are a dream on a Sunday!

Have a wonderful holiday.

We stayed at Les Domes de Miage in 2010. Travelling from West Cornwall, we stayed one night with our son (who lived in Camberley at the time) then caught the 10.00am ish Eurotunnel train the following morning and drove as far as Dole on the A39 just south of Dijon arriving late afternoon. We stayed at the Etap (now Ibis Styles) which had secure parking and a Buffalo Grill opposite to get an evening meal. The next day we drove to the campsite arriving in the early afternoon, giving plenty of time to check in and set up.

The campsite itself is in a fantastic location, within easy walking of the town and the facilities were spotless while we were there.

Make sure you take the Mont Blanc Tramway up the mountain whilst you are there too!

Hi, we are off to Italy this summer, catching the 0330 euro tunnel and using Camping les domes de miage St Gervais as our stop over. We reckon we'll be at the site 4-6pm, then on to Lake Garda the following day.

Hi Emollie,

We are booked on the 3.30am train friday 10 July, but hopefully they will put us on the 1.30 if get there early enough. We then are travelling as far down to Bourg-en-Brasse in Montagnet stopping in a Premiere Class, then only a few hours drive to Camping les domes de Miage on saturday morning. Im sure Im a bit over ambitious with all the driving as have a lot to do this side just to get to the tunnel! There will be two of us driving so fingers crossed all goes well.

andrea x

We use Premiere Classe budget hotels almost exclusively, and have in fact got 4 booked for July, averaging out at £27 each per night.

We have always found the car parking to be secure, fenced and gated.

And I like the fact that most PC hotels have a Campanile restaraunt within the same grounds, were you get 15% discount as a PC customer.

From Manchester we mostly use the PC at Armbouts Cappel, just 13 miles South of Dunkerque, for our first and last overnight stop in France.

Although we don't use Eurotunnel and we are towing.

Enjoy the Alps, Chamonix is quite a special place, especialy in the evenings, although it has been 23 years since we last visited that part of France.
