We are hoping to visit Tuscany this April and May. Has anyone advice about the best route to take with a caravan from Macon to Livorno. Advice on overnight stops would be welcome as well.

It' a choice of tunnels - Frejus or Mont Blanc. They are both the same price - 57 euros for car + caravan .

I'd choose the latter for better scenery. We''ve stayed at Sallanches at Camping Mont Blanc Village on the French side (middle photo on my gallery images) and near Aosta at Camping Monte Bianco on the Italian side, but haven't checked whether either site is open in April.

Monte Bianco doesn't open until 15 May. I think the nearest Italian sites you're likely to find open April after crossing the border are likely to be on the Italian Riviera.

Depending on how much time you've got it might be better heading Avignon / Aix / Nice / Genoa rather than one of the tunnels.

On that route I can recommend Camping Monplaisir at St Remy de Provence (just south of Avignon) and Camping Bella Vista near Albenga in Italy which are both open April.

But going tound the coast is a long way round, and although on the route via the tunnels sites in the north Italian plain are few and far between, there are a few possibilities, even in April.

Camping Bisalta at Cuneo is not much of a diversion from the A6 autostrada , a nice little site when we were last there and open all the year I think.

I think you'd only be adding a day or so going round the coast and have a much larger choice of sites. I don't tow a van and Macon to Cueno is pretty much at the limit for what I'm prepared to drive in a day.

If the OP has plenty of time on their hands to get down to Liverno then the riviera route is a real option. We came back that way last September from Italy although we'd gone in via Mont Blanc tunnel.
