We used a municipal (on Vals recommendation) on way back from Dordogne last year. It was lovely, clean, had everything we needed, helpful owner and cheap! We normally get out of tunnel and drive to Vendee but as will will have Poppy (13mth old retriever in tow) we would like to break journey for one night each way. Also gives us opportunity to sightsee.

Not sure where to start looking for municipals...had a look at their site but its daunting so thought I would ask here for any recommendations.

Wish list
- ideally half way ish between Calais and Coex
- something to look at nearby(don't mind what- history- nature etc)

We usually do the avoid Royan bridge route via Pont de Brotonne but not sure if we still need to do this.

We just look at the map in a site guide book for sites in the halfway area. What site guide books are you using? Which route are you taking? What is your halfway point where you want to stop?

Friends use the Municipal in Le Mans and have done for years. No idea of the name though

But going on the autoroute via Le Mans costs 55 euros in tolls each way, whereas the dual carriageway via Caen, Rennes and Nantes is toll free and only takes about 30 minutes longer.

So the choice of overnight site depends on the choice of route after Rouen.

Yep this I agree with - for Vendee from northern France ports I would always use Caen/Rennes/Nantes which savings will more than cover a site overnight.
I would also go north round Rouen using that route and bypass Rouen (ie Pont De Normandie)

Its about 30 miles further overall and maybe an hour more overall journey time at most depending on traffic on either route fo course

We stayed at the Municipal site near Le Mans recommended by Frannyvan and was highly delighted. The town isn't much to rave about,but there is a decent supermarket, a couple of bread shops and the site isn't too far away from the motorway. The washing facilities were spotless and although the site filled up as the afternoon wore on, it wasn't heaving. Lots of people we spoke to had stayed there for years and it's easy to see why. Booked for this summer following such a good experience last year.
