The tunnel is actually just before.,. Folkestone so not as far as Dover. We stayed at a delightful little campsite last year just about half an hour from Calais with our grandson who is 7 and he absolutely loved it. Its called La Ferme de Aulnes . It has a lovely heated covered swimming pool and many other facilities for children.

Lovely campsite highly recommended.

Hi,

Just checked.

No one has told you that the earlier you book the 'Chunnel' the less it costs, (or, put another way,) the later you leave booking your ticket, the more it will cost you!!!
And, just in case you didn't know, you have to book the return journey in one go with Tesco vouchers. You can't book the return leg in isolation. You can book the outbound journey on it's own but you won't be able to book the return leg

If you don't want to travel far , stay not too far from Calais ,eg Gandspette already mentioned. You have the Aquarium at Boulogne , Wimeroux a nice little place with a small beach.Malo les Bain , another seaside place near Dunkirk and Middlekerke a busy seaside resort in Belgium, not far away.

If you're going at Easter, or 'Whit' then you could take advantage of the ACSI Card (www.campingcard.co.uk) or Camping Cheques (www.campingcheque.co.uk). Each of these organisations offers 'discounts' on sites. The ACSI card sites are between 10 and 18 euros (still a few 10 euro sites) and Camping Cheques cost £15.95.   This pays for a night on site for two adults, car and caravan (or motorhome or tent), awning, and electricity. This is usually in the 'low season' period for each site, but low season on any European sites includes much of what would be peak season in Britain - and can run until the middle of July and again from the end of August.

On some ACSI sites you can take along three children under six free of charge. Chateau du Gandspette (mentioned above) accepts Camping Cheques. There are sites near DLP which accept ACSI and/or Camping Cheques.

At that time of year you won't need to book, even in school holidays, and I would just 'go' and see where the mood takes you!

Another tip jen21 if you are taking children early in the season, (Easter or Whit) is to look for campsite which has a heated Covered pool, as it can be a bit chilly to use an outside one at this time of year.

Also I have never found a great deal of difference in price by booking early on the tunnel, but what we have found is in school holidays it does get very busy so the sooner your can book the better

Iyanabint..yes I've looked at the tunnel for whit and you are correct some crossings are already sold out. Will book it next week when the kids are back at school.

Thanks Val A will have to get my head around camping cheques/ ACSI. Anything that saves money is good for me!

Hi Jen21

When you say camper van - how self sufficient are you? do you need a site or can you manage with aires?

At Easter your plans will be affected by the weather - last Easter my plan was on exiting the tunnel - if it's rainy turn left and head for Bruges (as plenty to do even if weather is poor) it is a little over an hours drive from Calais, you either have the choice of the motorhome aire off the ring road or Camping Memling jus out of town with a regular bus into the sights of Bruges,
If the weather is fine Turn right and head for Le Touquet, Harderlot Plage
or other "resort towns" - The motorhome aire at Le Touquet Paris Plage is adjacent to the yacht Club for a beer or two and is a pleasant walk along the dunes into Le Touquet.

What ever you decide - Have a great trip!

Guy.

I can highly recommend Le Champ Neuf near Rue/Quend Plage. Lovely heated indoor pool complex, free wifi, decent, popular takeaway food if you want it, sand playground with free bouncy castle.
We stayed a year ago, when we returned last summer we were greeted like long lost family!
We always go for an indoor pool in low season, keeps the children amused even if the weather is dire!!
