Has anybody ever stayed in a campsite near Mulhouse/Basel airport? I need to collect my OH there early June before we venture up into the Alps and on into Italy! Also, I will require a stop over somewhere along the way from Calais if anyone has any advice or experience. I will travel from Calais-Lille-Mons--Namur-Lux-Metz-Nancy and then across national roads (N59-D459-/D454 and onto the A35 to Mulhouse. I suppose somewhere maybe 2 hours from Calais would be perfect as I will have started my journey the first day from Leamington Spa and my ferry is at 13.00. P.S Campsites will need to be dog friendly!
Also, any advice of places to stay in Swiss would be great. We want to stay somewhere on a lake for a couple of days (was thinking Interlaken) and want to take a route into the north of Italy that is "as good as it gets" through the Alps. I was thinking Simplon Pass as I did it years ago (not while touring with a caravan) and enjoyed it. My OH has never been so I don't mind doing it again but am open to suggestions of other scenic routes!
I want to visit the Ferrari factory/tour near Modena and then make our way over to the Adriatic Coast and work our way North again before heading for Venice- Austria- Germany and home. All in all we have about 3.5 weeks to complete the trip so we will only spend 2 nights (ish) in most places on the way down, maybe 5 nights somewhere on the acratic coast and the 2 nights (ish) again in most places on the way back home, with a long haul dash if needed to make our ferry on the 5th July!! :-)
Any help/suggestions on the above would be greatly appreciated and apologies for the long, long post!!

There's a reasonable first site at Tournai if you don't get further than that on your first day, and others all down your route at Luxembourg, Metz, Nancy and so on.
You can google the name of each place and ask for Campings, but isn't it easier just to buy a good site guide and look them up ? That will give you sites around Mulhouse too and in Switzerland and Italy.
I assume you know about Swiss vignettes for both car and caravan ?
The Simplon pass is indeed towable with a good power weight ratio, though the St gotthard tunnel is easier and quicker.
I think you might struggle to find campsites close to Modena, as Italian sites are pretty well limited outside tourist areas
From a personal point of view we would dawdle more slowly than you say you are planning, but you know best what you want to do.
Yes, I could and will purchase a book of campsites but my post was more just to see if anyone had been down that direction in the past and to see if they had any advice on campsites to stay etc from their experience. A book doesn't really give you the personal information I was seeking.. Can anyone recommend a good book that lists sites in Europe?
I want to book the main sites and the rest will fall into place hopefully. With it being June/July I just wanted to have the main places (i.e the place we will stay for 5-6 nights and the place near Basel) organised and after that we can make plans as we go. Its a holiday after all and like you said, going at a slower pace would be better.
With regard to the route through Swiss. I would prefer a more scenic drive and at a slower pace than through the Gotthard tunnel and wondered if there was a similar or nicer route than Simplon Pass through the Alps that could be recommended!? Im not 100% up to date on the Vignettes. Am I right in saying it is only for the motorways? If this is the case, would it be advisable just to pay for it just in case I unintentionally end up on a motorway!?
Alan, your best immediate source of information about sites along your route is to use the Camp Site Search tab at the top of this page, and to use the links there to individual campsite websites and reviews of them. That way you will get a wider range of opinions than any one of us could give you.
The most useful site guides you can buy are the ACSI guide and discount card, sold in UK by Vicarious books, and the Caravan Club Touring Europe guides, sold to members and non members by the Club itself or by Amazon.
You will definitely need vignettes for car and caravan if you are going via Switzerland, whichever route you choose across that country.
Take care.

PS. I didn't mention scenic drives through Switzerland, and honestlly I can't.
For instance If you are going from your stay at Interlaken to the Simplon pass the scenic way to get there is to tow over the Grimsel Pass, but without knowing how young or old you are, how confident or anxious you would be on that road, how old or powerful your car is to tow a big caravan over that road...I won't take the risk of saying you should go that way.
Hi Berriow, thanks again for all your help. I will definitely look into the books and have spent the day looking sifting through the caravanning abroad section.
