Can anyone tell me if you have to worm and flea you dog before leaving the uk, our dog is regularly wormed and flea treat but our vet has said he needs to do the treatment before we go, i was on the understanding its to be done 1-5 days before returning to the uk not both ways x

Worming on return only, flea treat advisable before outward journey, not required on return.

I would be wary of any suggestion made by your vet in future, it sounds like he is wanting to charge you for unnecessary treatment.If your vet has prepared your Pet Passport I would check that it has been done correctly too.

Wormer on way back into UK.

My vet did mention treating for sandfly, he gave us a box of Advantix which covers fleas and ticks too. I only use that on my chap when we are going abroad not in UK.

Definitely only actually required on the way home (between 1 and 5 days before you return) but there are things abroad we don't get here so I'm going to flea and worm my dog before we go as well so she's covered while she's over there as well.

Thank you all for your comments, i thought i was right, i will be visiting my vets next week to pick the passport up, and i will be making sure its all correct and in order, we are going away for Easter so the dog will be due her worm and flea treatment next week any way so she will be covered, i have also bought my own flea and tick treatment, and worming tablets with the necessary active ingredient praziquantel in that defra state, to take with us, for a vet in France for our return to the uk. x

It is strongly recommended to apply a product such as Advantix before you go in order to protect against leismaniosis which is spread by sand flies and mosquitos. This disease is particularly nasty and spreading from the south of france, northwards. When we have taken our dog to the vet in France ready for return in the last two years, the vets have been most concerned about treatment, prior to going over there. Their is now a vaccine available for leismaniosis in France.

For Sandflies (leismaniosis) we use the Scalibor collars. Available online and although absorbed through the skin you can remove it if there are adverse reactions.
