I've booked the 7:30am Dover-Calais crossing and am heading towards the Alps the day after the UK schools break up for the summer. It'll be just myself and my two boys towing a Dandy folding camper abroad for the first time.
I want to overnight halfway to the Alps so the two days are short driving and I dont put the kids off doing it again!
The return is flexible, coming back slowly in the second week and am happy to find a site as we decide but I have two questions about the start.

Should I, and how can I, book for one night around Troyes and should I book a whole week at a site (I'm thinking www.camping-les3lacsdusoleil.com/en near Trept) or can I book, say four nights and then ask to stay if the boys like it?

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

I would book your overnight stay on the way, as you're on your own. I did a similar thing years ago, but it helped to know that somewhere, waiting for us, was somewhere we could spend the night.

I think, with a folding camper, I might even treat myself to a cheap overnight hotel - to save arriving late, unpacking, packing again in the morning, and moving on. You can find very reasonably priced hotels, with secure parking - Premiere Classe, B&B, Kyriad, and others, are all cheap and generally have a fenced and gated parking area. If you do go for the hotel option, and plenty of people do even with campers, then you can obviously book on line through something like booking.com. If you go for a campsite, then there is a perfectly good municipal site in Troyes http://www.troyescamping.net/ and you should be able to phone and book once the site opens again towards the end of March.

I think the date you're travelling will be important. I don't know quite when the school holidays start, but the French tend to holiday from around the second weekend in July - so things will be busy. If you coincide with that period then I think I would book a 'main' site unless you'd be happy with much smaller sites, where in many places you can still find pitches available even in peak season.
