Leaving U.K. next week for tour in Italy via The Romantic Road passing through Bavaria from Wurzburg to Fussen then into Italy via the Gotthard Tunnel.
During my stay in Italy I will visit Perugia and from there I wish to travel via the S318/S219/S76 via Grotto di Fassasi then onwards to the Adriatic Coast. Has anybody done this route with a caravan in tow? I believe they have updated this road with a number of tunnels under the mountain pass which now take trucks from the Med.to Ancona is this correct?

Why the Gotthard Tunnel when you are going from Fussen in Germany? The Brenner Motorway would be the best for Italy. If you care to email me on dvphillips14 at hotmail.com I can send you a route with campsites enroute . A good place to stop for Perugia is on Lake Trasemeno been there many times. Have you got your ACSI Card and Books?

We leave for Germany and Austria next week for our 12th tour in Europe.

Many thanks for your reply.
Reason for the Gotthard Tunnel is that we are visiting CinqueTerre (Sestri Levante)Campsite Fossa Lupara)on the Med Coast. Booked site staying there for a week. Have Used the Gotthard several times.
We are stopping on Lake Trasemeno for another week, so we can visit the mountain villages in that area by car to sample the wine and food before crossing over to the Adriatic Coast visiting on the way the famous "Grotto Di Frasassi".
Road permitting!!

still don't understand why you are using the Gotthard route! its hell of a drag from fussen to the gotthard tunnel, over the arlberg then if using motorways almost up to Zurich and back down . plus two swiss vignettes (unless you already have them) for me it would be brenner, bolzano, garda, piacenza and on towards genoa

I agree a real drag and would not eant to drive over the Arlberg with a caravan in fact I think it may be forbidden.

It is forbidden but the tunnel under the Arlberg pass only costs €9 and is not in the least life threatening.

Three years ago went down Die Romantische Strasse and through the Alps via Austria to Perugia. I first went down Die Romantische Strasse some 45 years ago.

I found it an easy drive, though German autobahns have a lower speed limit for caravans. However we were towing a lightish caravan not heavy rig you are trying to haul. Don't know how the Germans will view it, they have a legal tow weight of 80% of the car's kerbweight, though they ought to accept British requirements. There are some very, very long downhill motorway stretches, and brake/engine overheating may be an issue.

BTW, we averaged 37mpg from the channel to Perugia.

Please dont tell me that you are planning any other campsite at Trasimeno?

For the crossing, go Fussen and straight south, take the route over the Fernpass into Austria, and then the Brenner autobahn.

Hi,

Very new(!) to all this, so please be gentle with me!

I was fascinated by your trip report to Morocco (I presume it was a couple years ago now), but I was intrigued by a photograph you included in your report:

It was a photo entitle "Wild Camping In Spain" - this is an aspect I am REALLY interested in. I wonder if you would please let me know where this site was, as it looks beautiful and idyllic.
