We are going to France and Spain in June for three weeks with a caravan. Our intention is to head for The Costa Brava from Calais then travel across to Frejus and then back to Calais. Any advice on what route to take would be great and I would like it to include a visit to the Millau Viaduct. Only the ferry crossing booked at this time and was thinking of camping cheques for our stops and not pre booking. Do you think this is feasible.I am presuming it would be better to use Toll Roads and Motorways. Also any suggestions for stopover points please.

Hi MaverickDave - My suggestion for a route down would be Calais, Abbeville, Rouen, Evreux, Chartres, Orleans, Vierzon, Clermont Ferrand, Millau, then Beziers, Perpignan and the Costa Brava. This is a mix of autoroute, dual carriageway, a few sections of single carriageway, but is a good route all the way. You can have an overnight stop, or a few days, in/around Millau - the Camping Cheques site Les Peupliers at Riviere sur Tarn is a good one or Val de Cantobre at Nant. You can do the viaduct and also the fantastic Gorges du Tarn area.

I'm not sure where you're heading on the Costa Brava - but we stayed at L'Amfora at St Pere Pescador which is a Camping Cheques site, which we liked a lot. In the centre the pitches are in rows, and looked a bit crowded together but around the edges of the site you have more space and some pitches overlook the woodland at the rear/side of the site.

I wouldn't make your mind up about Frejus unless you have a particular reason for wanting to be there - see how you feel when you're on the Costa Brava and take it from there, but if you want to do it then there are plenty of Camping Cheques sites.

On the way back you will probably want to head either up to the Gorges du Verdon, then Sisteron and Grenoble, Lyon and back to Calais, or back up the Rhone Valley.

If you're going early(ish) in June then there should be no need to book anywhere - it's when we holiday and we never book. If the site accepts Camping Cheques then it's not likely that it will require booking in advance.

You may also want to get an ACSI Card (www.campingcard.co.uk) to give you an extra choice of discounted sites, but for your overnight stops (and indeed for some longer stops) you could look at the municipal campsites website (http://www.camping-municipal.org/) for sites run by the local 'town hall' and often well placed for a stroll into the town or village, shops and restaurants.

That's a long way in three weeks. Assuming you're not planning on staying for long in any one place then?

We have not decided how long we are going to stay in Spain as yet, we will probably see how we like each site as we get there. Thank you for the route suggestions Val, I will e mail you for details.
