Bonjour,

We are travelling from Calais to Pezenas and I am looking for suggestions on the best way to approach it.

We have 2 days to get there (leave Friday 17th July and arrive Saturday afternoon/lunchtime.

I would prefer to break the back of the driving on the 1st day leaving perhaps 4 hours on day 2.

I am keen to get suggestions on route and places to stay on the way down where we can get a cheap hotel for a family of 4 (family room).

We have travelled this route loads of times.......................

Head for Paris (A26 / A1).... the Peripherique really isn't as bad as a lot of people claim !

Follow signs for Orleans (A10)

From Orleans follow signs for Clermont Ferrand (A75)

Clermont Ferrand would be a good stopover for you.......plenty of budget accomodation (Formule 1  etc) and lots of places to eat.

I'd agree with Ro and Ali's route - although we do the first section non-toll because we have plenty of time.

Between the autoroute and Clermont Ferrand city centre there are many budget hotels of all types. Formule 1 is OK but with children it's not ideal as it only sleeps 3 and the bathrooms are down the corridor not en-suite. Look for chains which sleep four, or do a search with booking.com where you can input the number of adults, children, and how many rooms you want.

Non-toll via Rouen is the way we always go. We avoid Paris these days, having been delayed for hours last time we ventured that way. Paris may well be busy that weekend. This is because Saturdays in July are when most of northern France ups and goes south on holiday and traffic is likely to be heavy everywhere. This will also affect overnight hotel bookings, so you'll need to book a hotel well in advance and not rely on finding somewhere by just turning up.

We have done the Paris route and never had any problems, but we always travel midweek.
Highly recommend Ibis hotels for stop overs
