We would love to take our Staffie/German shepherd cross to France with us camping, but after looking on numerous websites, I am unable to come to a decision on what is legal and what isn't; some say Staffies with a pedigree are allowed (muzzled) some say any dogs appearing to look like a Staffie or similar breeds are not allowed and others say Staffie or dogs with out pedigree that appear to be 'attacking breeds' are allowed as long as they are muzzled. And then there is the other issue of what dogs a campsite will allow.....I am finding all this different information very confusing, as after all, the last thing that we want is for our pet to be refused entry, or worse still for him to be taken from us whilst on holiday and destroyed. Does anybody have any experience of taking their Staffie crosses into France, or any reliable/ correct information on this subject please?

Staffies can be taken to France. Please see the link below.

Campsites can of course have their own rules regarding dogs in general or for particular breeds. That is completely their own decision. Just check with whichever site you intend camping at re this.

We've had no problem taking our staffie Wilbur camping with us and the French are a more dog friendly nation than the Brits.

Should have added that ours is a staffie cross. My impression is that borders might have some interest in category one dangerous breeds. Everything else is difficult to enforce/control. When and which cross breed are dangerous..?? Etc etc.

Pure bred Staffies with a pedigree are no problem, cross breeds can be different, they could be classified as category 2.

Quote"Dangerous dogs in France are classified in 2 categories :

- Category 1 : attack dogs - They are dogs whose appearance is of American Staffordshire terrier (pit-bulls), Mastiff (boerbulls) and Tosa types (i.e. without pedigree). It is prohibited to introduce these dogs into France.
- Category 2 : defence and guard dogs – They are dogs of American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, and Tosa breeds (i.e. with pedigree), and dogs of a Rottweiler type (without pedigree).

Since 1st January 2010, by virtue of legislation dated 20 June 2008 and published in the Journal Officiel of 21 June 2008 (Loi du 20 juin 2008 renforçant les mesures de prévention et de protection des personnes contre les chiens dangereux), all owners of dangerous dogs (category 1 and 2) in France must hold a certificate of aptitude for keeping a dangerous animal, delivered by an approved trainer, and a licence (permis de détention) for the animal, delivered by the town hall (mairie) of residence. Until modification of the law to allow for a temporary derogation for category 2 dogs being imported into France, it is advised not to introduce such animals into France, whether on a temporary (holidays) or permanent basis. Sanctions may be incurred for absence of licence."

From the link and saxo1s notes your staff would need to be a particular type of cross, much larger in build as well as Pitt bull in appearance The other examples named are unlikely to apply to staff crosses as they are different in appearence.

What does your dog look like? Does he look like a staffie, or more like a German Shepherd? We've seen dogs which look 'Staffie-like' on campsites, and no one has seemed to worry.

If you have a particular site in mind why not get your vet to provide a statement of breed, and then send the site a photograph of the dog, and a copy of the statement, to see what they think.

Thanks every one for your help and suggestions :-)
The problem with Rosko is he has very wide jaws from the bull terrier in him but he is the height and size of a German Shepherd. Our worry is that in some ones opinion he may appear to be 'pit bull' looking, which of course he isn't but it worries us none the less...

Can you have a 'doggie DNA test' and prove his heritage? That way you can get a proper certificate from your vet to state his breed. I think they cost about £50 - which may be worth it if it puts your mind at rest. Sometimes DNA results can be quite surprising.

I haven't thought of that Val, but I am at the vets next week so shall ask her. That's a good idea, thanks.

Dawn - you can get a kit and do it yourself. They are for sale on Amazon, or ebay, and are easy enough to do. But you might feel better if you get your Vet to organise it. I think whatever the cost, if it helps you to holiday with your pet, then it will be worth it.

Yes, after you gave me that idea I had a look online and it's a lot cheaper than I imagined it to be. But I shall still be mentioning it to the Vet, as I think it's far better to have peace of mind. Thanks Val for getting back to me and for giving me the idea in the first place.

I just hope that it proves his 'heritage' and that you have no problems taking him on holiday with you.

My son has a similar dilemma - his dog has the staffie brindle coat and some characteristics of a staffie, but is taller, and very long limbed. His vet is of the opinion that he is mostly boxer, with some labrador thrown in and possibly a bit of staffie there too. He will need to have a DNA test before they come on holiday to France

Yes it is a dilemma Val, because I couldn't think of anything worse than having a beloved pet taken from you. I spoke to my vet yesterday about it and she wasn't sure, so she went and asked her boss (vet) who she said was of the opinion that the French authorities wouldn't accept the DNA test if it came down to it. So we just don't know what to think....Because of the uncertainty, we are now considering Holland as they have lifted the dangerous dogs ban on pit bulls etc We have friends in Holland and know it's beautiful around Limburg, so I think this will be the alternative. We are still going to do the DNA test though just out of curiosity!!! [
