Will we be able to use credit cards in Germany as we are used to doing in France ie for fuel/supermarket etc. Are there fuel stations that just take cards? Thanks ...would sppreciate up to date info!

I think it does depend on Supermarket. We used Aldi/Lidl/Norma mostly and they only took Eurocard debit cards. Credit cards ok for fuel, restaurants etc though. We only discovered bigger Supermarket in Lindau on our last day, so I don't know if they took them. We did shop a couple of times in Superlutty across the border in Austria, good shop but still didn't take credit cards.

It is perfectly true that credit cards are not as widely accepted in Germany as they are in the UK. However you should be able to use them in main brand fuel stations. The main supermarket group that accepts credit cards is REWE which is a nice quality supermarket. There are other groups but they either are not national brands or are in the old east of the country. Sometimes you can use them at campsites but its not universal. In Germany it always pays to have a bit more cash with you. I am sure one of the reasons for more places not accepting credit cards in Germany is the high transaction fees charged by the card companies. However this could change as the EU have ruled that much lower limits are to be introduced, just a fraction higher than those fees charged for debit cards. If you use the likes of a Halifax Clarity credit card you can use that to withdraw cash from ATM's without the normal charges.

Agree with David, REWE was a much nicer supermarket than others and the only one that accepted or card. No problem with fuel, all garages we used took it. Be careful of caravan sites, two we used wouldn't accept our card and that meant withdrawing a lot of cash to pay the site.
Credit cards are not accepted in most shops but ok in Garages/service areas. Debit Cards that are accepted mostly are Maestro but a few accept Visa and N MasterCard.
Rewe is the best place for Credit Cards.. Much the same here in Austria where we are now.. American Express certainly not accepted.
We have been travelling in these countries for 30 odd years and it has always been the same.
If you are using ACSI Card campsites like you to pay in cash.

We were in Rudesheim last summer and a few tourist / restaurants had the Master Card sign in their window, typically I've a Visa I had to ask if Visa was accepted the majority of the time I was told no.
