Hi everyone,

A group of us are looking to travel across the channel to watch a couple of stages of this year's Tour de France. Currently the plan is to get the ferry to Dieppe on the 8th July and then travel to Le Havre the next day to see the stage 6 finish (a flat stage from Abbeville along the coast to Le Havre).

The four of us will be travelling in a campervan (sleeps 2 inside) with a fold-out tent on the roof. Unfortunately the ferry arrives into Dieppe rather late (22:30) which seems to limit our options for places to stay overnight.

At the moment we're thinking of staying at the municipal aire in Doudeville (in the countryside between Dieppe and Le Havre). As I understand it, camping in a tent isn't allowed but does anyone know if this also applies to a fold-out tent on the roof?

The Doudeville aire is around a 40 minute drive from Dieppe and ideally we'd be a little closer. Can anyone recommend any alternatives in the Dieppe area?

Any TDF or general tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You will need toilets and wash rooms - does the Aire or the camper van have any facilities?

If not, consider campsites closer to the ferry such as Camping des Deux Rivieres, Camping la Source, etc   and see whether they can let you in after such a late ferry arrival.

The camping France.com website lists 19 campsites within ten miles of Dieppe.

Our van is only equipped with very basic cooking facilities so the lack of a toilet at the Aire could be a problem!

Camping la Source looks great and we're going to stay there on our return journey. Realistically we wouldn't get to a campsite until 23:30 so I'm going to admit defeat and book a cheap hotel for the night in Dieppe.

Thanks for your help.

With regard to the Tour de France, make sure you know the route and plan to get to your viewing point about half an hour before the Caravanne goes past. On the day the main route will be closed to traffic up till the the support vehicles have gone through, so opens fairly quickly.

Before the race it is best to plan to avoid having to cross the route. I would normally use Google to see where a good view point is likely to be. Look for an incline or corner that will slow the bikes down a bit.

Thanks, it looks like the detailed route hasn't been announced yet but I think either the finish in Le Havre or somewhere around Etretrat will be good for spectating.

HI hubble, i seem to remember Dieppe has a motorhome parking area right beside the port, there is also another area along the front, the one by the port had automatic gates with payment for 24hr use, they looked like they were being slept in! good luck!

Hi just got back last week from camping la source we stayed here for the week. It is only 15 to 20 mins off ferry. Would recommend good site, and available for motorhomes. There was a few motorhomes on site and they all stayed either one or two nights. shower blocks warm. big supermarket 5 mins away to stock up your van. And fuel, 88 pence a litre.
We arrived at 4 in morning. So I emailed the owner told him we would arrive very early, so he told us to park on the car park in front of his house, we arrived as planned, opened the gate then went sleep till 8 then booked in. If you want any more information I can give it just ask.

caroline129: Thanks for all of your Camping La Source information, looking forward to staying there. The Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery sounds like it could be worth visiting too.

noobfamily: Thanks, the D925 Aire looks great - the view in that picture is absolutely amazing.

Hi our sat nav sent us through the town on arrival. Not the best route. keep to main roads, d485, d154e, d927, (this roundabout is where Auchun is) d925, when we got to petit-appeville, our new (and upto date) tomtom wanted to send us down very narrow road on the right, then left and left again so going in a circle, dont do this turn left at lights, there is a sign on the lights for the site. Its not far on left under a bridge. Follow the narrow road campsite at end, when you turn under bridge the road to your right is where the canadian graves are, at top of bank look for it on the right, as the road flattens out also signposted.
Happy to help, have a good trip.
