Not sure if this has been covered before but thought I would post as I hadn't seen anything about this.

New rules came in July 2014 which means the cover you receive under the EHIC card is now the same as people living in the country you are visiting and you are no longer able to reclaim any co-payment you are required to make.

So for example, in France only 70-80% of the cost of treatment will be covered, depending on the type of treatment.

I didn't realise this rule change had happened, we are lucky that we have always had medical cover anyway but I know lots of people travel in the EU just relying on the EHIC and just wanted to warn people to look at their cover.

Apologies if this has already been covered and I have missed it but hope this is useful to anyone else that didn't know.

You'll be lucky to get 70% covered. When we were in France and my husband had an accident the EIHC card only covered 20% of the hospital costs - the rest had to be paid by insurance. He also had to get dressings from the local pharmacy to take to the local nurse. We had to pay the pharmacist and pay the nurse every day. NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT HEALTH INSURANCE

Last month a friend staying with us needed an emergency stay in our local hospital, his EHIC card covered 80% of the bill. As he is a pensioner he has claimed back the other 20% and all the pharmacy costs from the EHIC office in Newcastle . He wasn't charged for the emergency ambulance. He is waiting there response....

Though be aware hospital costs are approaching €1000 per day.
