Booked our first camping trip abroad down to the south of France in August with an overnight stop in Cleremont.

Got the EHIC cards for us all, going to sort the car insurance and getting the AA membership to cover us too.

BUT thinking we need more travel insurance especially to cover our equipment too any recommendations or am I over thinking things.

You may be covered on your house or can amend house insurance I assume your tenting, an idea of how much value you are worrying about and what your worrying about happening too it is your first question. Then decide against the cost of covering it   I am caravan and car so both insured, kit some is some isn't covered on house insurance and caravan cover.

Our Kit is now 8 years old, Trailer, Tent and a shed load of stuff.

I used to insure when it was all shiny and new, but don't bother now, as it stands me at nowt, and current day value would be next to nothing in the eyes of an insurance company.

Having said that the European Travel cover that comes with the company car I drive, does include the Tent and Trailer, but to what extent I have no idea.

Having been going to France camping since 1978, we never ever bothered with Holiday insurance, but since turning 50 back in 2010, we take out insurance, it actually works out cheaper to go for annual cover than just say a fortnights cover.

It costs us for Couples cover £30, info found on the Martin Lewis website.

It covers the bits that the EHIC does not cover, and a whole bunch of other stuff, should we need it, but does not cover for the Tent or Trailer, but does for some bits of the kit.

Although I am quite sure the portable fridges and satelite kit are not covered!

I suppose thinking more about kit - just paid out for brand new tent, extension etc

Suppose medical would be the same as any other package holiday.

Will check our home insurance out and see what that covers us for, I pay top whack so hopefully it will help us out!

You need breakdown cover for your vehicle and you need health insurance cover for each party member.

The EHIC card will only give you the same medical care as is available to people in the country you visit. What if you need repatriating to uk through a major medical emergency. What if your driver breaks a leg and someone needs to get you home?

It's happened to me. It happens to people all the time. I had private emergency intensive care in Spain and repatriation with doctor in attendance, private UK ambulance and a driver would have been sent from UK to repatriate my car, wife, dog, caravan had my son not been in a position to do it.

Wow one stop on the way down south! You must be young or you don't realize how big France is. You'll be knackered. Why not take two or three stops on your way down. Far less tiring and you're on hols so why the pressure. Ah well as you might guess we are oap's and can't move as quick!
As far as travel insurance, we do ours through the bank and it's free with certain types of account. Ask for details at your bank. We insure our Pathfinder separately with insurance for trailer tents. Very reasonable and it's not just the 'loss' but the hassle you get when/if (God forbid) you're involved in an accident even if it's not your fault. Plenty to think about. Anyway, happy hols and stay safe

Derekcbr - taken advice from friends who have done this trip before staying at same place they did, both of us happy to drive so each can have a break.

Yes still (quite) young and the fact campsite we're going to only books Sat to Sat don't have holiday entitlement to have a long leisurely adventure there and back!

I am going to obviously get the travel insurance for medical reasons but wondered if anyone had advice on companies that will cover equipment too. £1000 on a new canvas palace is a lot to lose! Well for us anyway!

Hels .... as mentioned, above .... get in touch with your home insurance providers and ask how much extra it would cost to add the tent etc to the 'out of house' items list.
I've been able to claim for camcorders on my home insurance ... for instance.
By the way ... one stop is perfectly doable ... with 'correct' breaks .... I once did London - Granada in one go! In my mad youth!

Easily do able in a one stop with a tent either in car or on tow even Derektor your in my part of the world and I can get to lac dorient ( I go the other way down to SofF) with a caravan on tow one day and 47yrs old    I suppose Helen doesn't say where she is so if in say Deal in Kent is the start point its easier still   Back to thread though
For that amount of money yes definitely add it to your home insurance it will be far cheaper though of course watch the disclaimers with any insurance
Not sure what you are worried about happening to it, its pretty safe on a campsite save the weather antics. in your car its covered on your car insurance as it will probably be covered if towing it in a trailer   Hers the catch though if you take out a specific insurance for this item and then they ask about your home policy heaven forbid you need to claim, they will or may then shirk some responsibility to your home insurers or bank insurers   in other words any way out if there is the possibility its covered twice hence the home insurance extra cover and tell them its only for 3 weeks though they may wish you to cover it when kept in the garage when home its a minefield

As your Tent is a recent purchase, then getting the insurance is a good idea, if only for peace of mind, Shield will cover it, a Tent of that value including kit would be around £50 for the Annual Policy at a guess.

As for getting to the campsite, unlike Caravans and MotorHomes, us Tenters have a lot of work to do when we get to the campsite.

After a long drive, don't under estimate how tired you will be, when it comes to pitching a tent in Temps going on for +30Deg C.

We always aim to get to the campsite no later than noon, OK most French campsites say your Pitch is available from 2pm, but if the Pitch is vacant when you arrive, they will more than likely let you on.

We do 3 overnights in France on the way down to the Med, and 2 on the way back, we have done it in less in the past, so long as you don't over do it, you will be fine, and as your young what the hell!

Thanks all will contact house insurance today as well as looking at Shield.

Hubby is a bit worried when we leave the car overnight although the hotel states it has secure parking you can't pre-book it so a bit of a sticky point if you see what I mean.

Francis that's the idea of staying in Cleremont should have a good night sleep and be able to arrive on site around midday ish.

We are actually just the other side of the dart ford tunnel in Essex so the trip to Dover isn't too bad for us!

Well if its in your car its then covered on your car insurance or will be subject to the limits of the cover eg 1000 personal effects etc   Have a look at your personal effects on you car insurance I suspect even if you covered it on your house insurance and heaven forbid (touch mouse as no wood) it was stolen then the house insurance mob would say contact car insurance people

We do the same trip once or twice a year and usually stop off once after a first days long drive. Its just so easy in France. Don't worry.
