Well, our first French camping trip - together - was at Fouras, at Camping du Cadoret. The site has a pool - I can't remember about slides or not - and across the road a rather tricky mini-golf that opens at night.
The area is quite flat - so brilliant for cycling.
Fouras itself was charming with lots of Belle Epoque villas, and a smattering of restaurants, shops and patisseries. I yearn for the plum tart we had there. There's a small amusement/fair area if I recall, on the southern side of the town near the fort.
You would be about 40 mins from La Rochelle, but on the 'right' side to park at Les Minimes, the marina. It was free to park and you take a boat into the town proper.
We had a great holiday. The site is quite busy but with a view from the washing up place across the sea and the setting sun, it was a pleasant spot. There was occasional entertainment at night, plus the little bar and shop.
I did put a full review on here but that was 2009, so maybe there may be some newer posts around.
The tide does go out a long way, but the sands are kept really clean, and when the tide comes in, the water is very warm - if a little silty!
Great for oysters if you like your seafood, Charentais melons, and Pineau de Charente wine. The latter go very well together
------------- Do campers 'peg it'?
