Hi All,

The OH and I are hoping to go to France in early July to catch a stage of the Tour de France in Normandy. We usually book Dover-Calais with DFDS. I've just been looking at some quotes and I'm after a bit of clarification regarding DFDS car dimensions. We are going over in a Landrover Defender 110 which has a height of a shade over two metres and this is not normally a problem with DFDS as it fits under their '2.35 car' category.

However, we hope to buy a stand-up paddle board and maybe a kayak whilst out there which puts us over the 2.35 height limit,as they will be transported back on the roof. When i do a quote based on a 'car with low clearance' 4.35 x 4.8m the quote is almost half of that of 'car' 4.35 x 8m. Two things; a) I am not actually sure what car with low clearance means and b) why the big discrepancy in cost? Is it due to the extra length?

Aplogies if it is a bit of a dim question!

In your message you talk about 2.35 Height, but then you say 4.35 x 4.8m & 4.35 x 8m?

I am therefore confused just as much as you! LOL.

I would suggest in that case to 'Phone a Friend' in DFDS and put the question to that person who can answer you with total certainty about the price.

Good luck!

Sorry, when you do the quote there are various car dimension categories that you can choose from and you select the one that applies to your vehicle. One is car under 2.35m height and 6m length, one being car under 4.35m height and 4.8m length and then car with low clearance at under 4.35m height and 8m length.

Guess it is 'phone a friend' time!

Yes its the length that counts there are generally 2 or three heights on any ferry and a car 4.35 x 4.8 long meters will always take up a lot less space than a car 4.35 x 8 meters   They cant put anything on your roof save the lower height deck above..

Im assuming that's the question you asked, as regards a standard car with low clearance its your average height car sort of 1.8 meters however they still obviously have to leave room on the deck for people to stand up so as long as your vehicle is under 2.4 metres your ok ...all that said save your self a few quid and find my recent post on p and o ferries

Having watched some-one desperately tearing a roof box off their car when the Speedferries people wouldn't allow them on because they had not been upfront about their vehicle height... I would be as accurate as possible

Can you not take them off the roof, get OH to walk and stick the stuff in the back for the crossing?

thanks all for the replies and I had read with interest the post regarding with P & O as we went with them last year so I'll remember that trick. I could ask the OH to walk but I wish to see the sun rise the following day....

If it helps I have a crossing booked with DFDS this summer and changed both the times and the car height as I decided to take a roof box and they were really nice to deal with. No additional 'admin' charges on the changes I wanted just the difference in prices.
