Hi

We are looking to go to the south of France and wondered if anyone had any recommendations for "quiet" campsites.

We don't want to pay for facilities we wont use such as entertainment, swimming pools and water slides.

We have used municipal sites in northern France but seem to be struggling to find them in the south.

Don't want to drive all the way to the south and not find anywhere suitable!

We are looking around Nice, Cannes, St Tropez - or any other recommendations would be welcome.

Oh and I work in a school so will be travelling the last 2 weeks in July/ early August.

Are we asking the impossible?

Many thanks

Bee

There are lots of municipal sites all over France - check out the website http://www.camping-municipal.org/

HOWEVER, and it's a big however, campsites in the area you want to visit are likely to be very busy indeed at the end of July and into August. It's absolute peak season in France, and you may have to go well inland to find a site which has spare pitches during that period. It's also an area which at that time will be manic with traffic, and to me someone who wants quiet campsites isn't likely to be the sort of person who appreciates queueing in traffic for hours to get from one place to another, nor all the 'glam and glitter' which you'll find in that area.

I would look much further inland and just have an early start and a day trip down to the coast, but I'm sorry I can't recommend campsites because it will be just a question of looking through what's available and checking whether they have free pitches. It certainly won't be easy to just 'turn up' as you can do further north.

We were at Camping de Vaudois down at Roqubrune-Sur-Argens close to Frejus, back in July last year.

It was our first visit to this campsite, and I was surprised how quiet it was for the time of year, in fact even Frejus was quiet compared to what I have experienced in the past, there were many empty pitch's but they all seemed to have been pre-booked with a little notice advising that the pitch was not vacant.

So I don't think just turning up in July would be a good idea, the campsite had no animations whatsoever, the swimming pool was gorgeous with not a slide in sight.

There are a couple of reviews on here, but have a look at there website, it does read like the type of campsite that you are looking for.

That part of France, at that time of year, is probably the worst possible combination ... I'd certainly be inclined to book ... and, probably avaoid the coastal sites as Val suggests.
Here's the municipals link

Hi

Thank you for your replies.

This is the sort of info I was looking for ;-)

Staying a bit in land wouldn't be too much of a hassle as we take our Vespa on the back of the motorhome so we can pitch up and stay put but still travel around.

Has anyone stayed at the municipal site in Menton?

Thanks again

Bee

Bee, Camping Saint Michel at Menton was closed for renovations in 2013, reopened for tents in 2014, but caravans and Motorhomes were not allowed.

But whether that still applies this year I am afraid I don't know, so perhaps an enquiry to the town tourist office might get you an answer.

Hi Bee
Les Romarins in Maussane-les-Alpilles is a municipal site in the village, because of this situation it has to be quiet. It's not in the area you mentioned but is very handy for visiting many great places.
I think you will find Nice, Cannes, St Tropez area very, very busy and anything but quiet!
Good Luck
Jan

Many thanks again guys.

We don't mind visiting busy places, just like the campsite to be quite chilled after a busy day.

I will check out the place you mentioned Jan.

And many, many thanks Berriow - as this was a site I was favouring as Menton looks lovely.

Any more info still gratefully received ;-)

Cheers

Bee
