Just read a comment on another thread about Municipal campsites not accepting twin axle vans. We are booked in at Pont de l'arche for an overnight stop en-route to the Dordogne with friends who have a twin axle! Does anyone know if this site accepts twin axles? Otherwise any suggestions in the area for an over night stop.

Hi,

I don't tow a caravan but have seen lots of twin axles on municiples in France.

From what I understand is is similar to the "no commercial vehicles" rule we often often see on sites in The UK which is polite way of saying gypsies are not welcome.

although It might be worth checking the approach on google earth just incase there is a more genuine reason.

Guy,

There is a tight access to the campsite at Pont de L'Arche and I think twins may find it difficult, but it would be worth an email to ask the question.

If you're heading south then the site just about 20 miles south at St Remy sur Avre (Nonancourt) does accept twin axles and access is easier.

in line with the above post, if there are convoys of travellers in an area, then suddenly you may find 'No twin axles' signs appearing on campsite noticeboards - often hurriedly scribbled!

You sure about the access Val. I've only been once but can remember turning left into the entrance and a large car park with MH dump out station to my right which seemed to give plenty of room to swing in.

If you take the 'proper' route to the site, around the top of the town, on the D321 then Av Gen De Gaulle, then there is a tight corner after the roundabout at that junction, and then a reasonably tight turn into the site itself.

If you try to get down through the narrow streets of the town you could end up doomed - and we've seen someone try it.

I think Caravan Europe (Caravan Club) used to mention the tight access, but we don't buy it any more since the change of layout.

Stayed at that site.
was tight got a 7.9m van, however not twin axle. If memory serves me right, I did get in through the first turning but if you go past the site entrance and go into the car park, its a lot easier to line up! I'm sure the gates were very narrow.

Did you unhitch

I think the best route to the site is by crossing the bridge and turn immediate left at the traffic lights, down to the river and turn left, site is on the right in less than a 1/4 of a mile. It is a little narrow but nothing an experienced caravanner can't handle

No I did not unhitch but I got a big cheer from the drinkers at the bar.And no damage to car or van
Could not go that way Harry B last year because the road was closed with the fun fair.

We went this way

The road HarryB mentions is often closed - for the market, for flea markets, Fetes, and fun fairs, so only for the brave, unless you can park somewhere and check it out first.

I would use the route I mentioned around the top of the town, and back along the riverside from the west.
