So much to see..we will probably bomb down to Venice. After that it's all an adventure !has anyone any advice/camp sites to recommend ?then home via Switzerland....slight complication as to pitches as in a Bell tent +3 older children but will save that for the next post

You'll see the site we used in Venice in my reviews list ... plus a few observations on transport to and from the city. It's so amazing ... the biggest open air museum in the world! Allow at least a couple of days to wander and a couple more for all the museums, churches and building interiors ... and ... oh, just go and get hooked!
We went via France/Germany/Austria ... then back via Tuscany, France ... but there are so many variations you can build ... so much depends on what you like to do/see.
I agree with what Kelper says, give yourselve plenty of time down there. I was stationed in North Germany and used to tow down to Garmisch Partenkirchen, stay overnight in a layby, then up and over the Alps, (cant remember the pass) but we used to come out north of Turin.
I guess from uk you could cross over via Luxemburg area to get onto the German Autobahn system and use that all the way down.
Youll like Venice, we used to stay on site for 3 weeks amidst loads of Germans and Dutch, we loved it
