My partner and I are heading to France in July and are thinking of camping in either Southern Brittany (Carnac/Trinite Sur Mer) or La Rochelle. We would like somewhere warm, hence why we were thinking of La Rochelle but Southern Brittany seems to have more to do in terms of cycling, sailing etc and little towns to visit.
Does anyone have any advice for chossing between the two areas and any recommendations for good campsites for a young....ish couple please?
Thanks,
Mike

Go with your gut instinct for Brittany. Both areas have things to recommend them in their own right. I've been to both and like both although Brittany was the wettest holiday I've ever experienced in France.
There's always another year for the one you don't choose this time.
Brittany last year was the wettest holiday I've ever had anywhere, let alone France! However, it looks like it might be better this July & we're back for another stab at it next week.
Keep an eye on the weather reports & decide when you get there. That's where we went wrong last year, we had booked ahead & were stuck in the centre of all the bad weather. We haven't bothered to book this year & will just decide when we get off the ferry.

We are in southern Brittany now, near Quimperalé, it's toasty!!! Meteo France say it's here for a while. I'm loving the area, so much to see and do, then there's the beaches!!!
I've only ever toured both in the motorhome but would, personally, recommend Brittany. The whole region is wonderful and the coastline is amazing. Weather can be a bit nippier in the evening (or at least it was the year we went) but that is more than made up for in the general feel/culture of the place.
Ile de Rè La Tour des Prises is great with bike paths from the gate, (a must), the sea is a short walk through the forest & there's a pool en site.
Camping La Garenne in Pont L'Abbe d'Arnoult is lovely, set in the trees next to a 3 pool complex in an old town with a superb Saturday market.
You are more likely to get better weather down there than in Brittany.
Hope you have a good holiday!

As Above - The lies de Re and Oleron both offer great cycling as do the Vendee a Velo cycle routes including a fantastic coastal route.
No sure what crossing you will take but La Rochelle is that much of a further drive from eastern ports and in my experience the weather is more reliable.

------------- It's only an expensive hobby when it's parked on your Drive....use it, love it , live it.
The ile d'oleron is lovely, the beaches around Les mathes are gorgeous, the area around Carnac is brill. All over lovely beaches, nice towns and in my experience good weather. However, Les mathes was the most consistent weather.
All great places, wherever you go, its France, it will be great

Thank you for all the recommendations everyone. We have decided to head to Brittany this time, perhaps Vendee next year! I found a site near Carnac at Trinite-Sur-Mer and hoping to do some sailing there.
