Hi Everyone,

For the last 6 years we have taken our caravan from Roscoff to the South of France. We normally do a massive drive on day one and go via Rennes Tours Claremont Ferrand and the Millau Bridge we stop over at approx 9pm at a campsite just off the A75.

We like this route as it is fairly quiet even on a Saturday.

This year we are staying further West near Narbonne. The via micheline recommend the West coast route via Bordeaux which I seem to remember was packed and really expensive in tolls the only time we have used this route. What is your opinion on the best route (value of tolls, least jams but doing it over 2 days with a 10 and 8 year old)

I am considering the N12 A20 route.

We are regular Roscoff users and have often minimised tolls on that route by going Roscoff, Rennes, Nantes, Bressuire, Poitiers, Bellac, Gueret, Montlucon, Clermont Ferrand ( they are all actually by passed) and then the A75 southwards - but it takes us three days not two.

The motorway via Bordeaux and Toulouse will certainly be quicker. I haven't costed it recently but viaMichelin will work it out for you. Good luck.

The Nantes Bordeaux and Bordeaux Toulouse and Toulouse Perpignan tolls are very expensive particlarly if towing a caravan or with motorhome. You can take the route to Poitiers and then to Limoges and join free motorway down towards Brive La Gaillarde. You can then either take the road towards Sarlat and on to Toulouse using RD roads or cut across to Figeac. You can then either go across to MIllau or down to Carcassonne and enter Narbonne this way. There are plenty of sites to stayin on or close to this route but it depends if you want to make the journey part of the holiday and this way is likely to take two or three days.

Its always difficult if you have time restrictions b ut if not it much nicer to see more of France than the countryside flashing past on the autoroute. If I can help any further then just drop me a mail

We normally just drive and stop late to get to the south then take our time coming home with more stops!

I think Brive La Gaillardia is doable in a day, but only if we can find a stop over campsite that I takes late arrivals! So will look into finding a site in this area and see if it is possible.

We camped in Sarlat for a week last year on our way home and drove this in 1 journey back to roscoff, but did the route very late at night so no other cars on the road!

There is a site in Souillac which is about half an hour south of Brive. We have used the campervan aire attached but its a nice site. Dont know how late they will allow. Alternatively if you go to Beaulieu sur Dordogne which is about half an hour towards Figeac there is a stunning campsite on an Island in the Dordogne river. We stop there regularly as its right by town and can walk everywhere. Its Camping Les Iles.
