Canicule

I'm glad I'm not in the van over the next week...

Take care

Well I'm certainly glad I'm in my 'van, nice shady pitch to retreat to though. No future in driving 600miles to Dogdoneshire and then moaning that it's too hot. Obviously ok on a naturist site but I'd hate to have to wear pants in this heat. What's it like? I've never done textile camping south of Paris.

Naturist or not, its the night time temperatures that do the damage, Bergerac tomorrow night is forecast to be 28C at midnight.

Though my wife was saying this afternoon at the local 'out patients' clinic, in the waiting area the heat was really oppressive and a lady who seemed to be really struggling with it just collapsed, luckily an ambulance crew were on hand with the 'electric pads' to resuscitate her.

Anybody remember the 'canicule' of 2003?

Yes, 2003 canicule, that was later, in August I recall. We were in much the same area except on the coast at CHM Montalivet, we are off to there Fri. As long as one can get into sea and pool it's ok, far as I'm concerned it can last until Sept. Low € and money saved 'cos I ain't had to go all the way to Spain like last yr to get some heat. For Brits on their hols at least, whats not to like?

It's been 36.5 degrees today, and it's still 31 at 20.06!

Unfortunately it looks like we've no option but to travel in this heat - and hope that our ferry won't be cancelled. I can't imagine sitting in temperatures in the high thirties on the dockside at Calais with no shade at all!

We travelled from Zebrugge to Chalon-sur-Saone on Tuesday. We were fine in the car with air con on but we watched the temperature rise to 37.5°C. Each time we left the car it was a real shock to the system! We're now in nice cool hotel room, bracing ourselves for puting up the tent in our destination in Provence this afternoon. Oh well, c'est la vie, we wanted some decent weather after a cool, grey June in Scotland!

We have fled up to Savoie as the Meteo showed this as a "green" area ( no special precautions) but we are experiencing temperatures in the high 30s. Hate to think what is like around Bordeaux or in Bourgogne

Heat and wrinklies don't mix

Naturist camping/caravanning is little different to anyother branches of the pastime, apart from small details like lack of pants, communal showers and cleaner pools. Obviously like all aspects of our hobby it needs to be discussed.

Threads need to be kept on topic, this one is about the canicule and as one sits sweatily on a campsite in this heat one might just decide the naturist campsite down the road is a better place to be. If one can get over the naked bit one is just about there.

Canicule is a new term to me, but I certainly remember 2003 and have never experienced heat like it before or since. 40 degrees in Brittany and on the west coast. Ouch.

I think we're all guilty of promoting our own preferred way of holidaying.

I imagine people who love to plan and book in advance get exasperated by those of us who continually mention 'We just go where we please, when we please'. Those who zoom down the toll roads probably think us 'meanderers' are boring when we mention it in almost every thread. Those who love British owned CL type sites probably despair when we suggest 'Try something a bit more French'.

Everyone is different and has a different way of posting and of spending their holidays. Everyone has something valid to say, and perhaps someone just may try another way to holiday and actual enjoy it as a result???

Maybe the heat is getting to people!

Well said Val   I was more intrigued as never heard the word canicule before   You live and learn   My six year old has decided its because its so hot you have to reach for a 'can of cola' canicule So is now insisting we take a cool box full..48 she has decided as she has read with her brother it will hold 48 cans on the side. They will last till Dover at least on the way down. Love the way children think.
