I would just beware in using anything plugged in during the night. We had one of these things overheat - it was faulty, but it started to turn brown and was very hot indeed. Fortunately I woke up and smelled something odd in the caravan.
If you're sleeping with the door mesh zipped, then I would just spray inside the tent twenty minutes or so before going to bed, go through the mesh in the dark - and then zip up quickly after you go in.
Citronella candles work to a limited extent, but I think you'll be wasting the plug in version as it will just disperse. Just cover yourselves in repellant - or eat garlic, vitamin b tablets, and marmite before you go on holiday.
That way mozzies are killed, but you are safe.
Exactly THIS. Spray your tent inside the meshed bedroom bit.

We have also travelled widely in France - but unlike the Marstoncoopers, we've seen plenty of snakes.
I am in fairness more of a city 'ite' not one for wandering through villages or rural save for the campsites but was trying to play down the wildlife so not having folks worried.

I don't think anything is more worrying than seeing something that you are unprepared for and therefore are more likely to be frightened of. I thought it was far better to know that snakes are mostly harmless, scorpion stings are no worse than a wasp, and that you may come across the odd wild boar wandering the 'streets' at night!
Sorry to worry anyone but 'better the devil you know'..........!

What sort of spray would you use? Different stuff than you would put on your skin? We use the coils outside the tent in the evenings but never spray anything inside and the little buggers love me. The skin so soft stuff is ok but I hate feeling so oily. I would be very keen to try spraying something on / in the tent if you can make a recommendation. Thank you
Looking forward to seeing some of the furry critters you mentioned though Val. We will be going on walks, so I'll be extra vigilant and keep my son out of long grasses or their equivalent.
You can use any of the 'fly sprays' which are on sale here or in French supermarkets to spray in the tent/caravan/camper etc. Take the normal precautions suggested on the tin, and cover food, remove animals, etc, for the time interval suggested.
Don't spray it on to the tent fabric, just the space inside the tent.
With regard to the wildlife...the more you look the more you will see, having seen some of it you might then wish you hadn't looked...
As for long grass the bigger concern would be ticks..you can get tick removers from any vet for a euro or two..they work just as well on humans as they do on cats and dogs.
Are mozzies etc worse in late August/early September? We are in France during June usually but have an additional hol this year near Saint Tropez. Should I go armed with more than I usually do?
I got bitten in Poole last week before getting the ferry! No mozzies here in the Vendee so far. I put on Avon Sss body butter after my shower. I still got bitten recently in Greece though. I have just been told about Johnsons baby oil to deter mozzies but you cant get it here and it might be too oily for you anyway
