We have 2 days to get from Provence to Calais in August and we are looking for a lovely stopover.
We have never been to Annecy and really fancy it. But it isn't even half way so if we stayed there 2 nights it will leave us with a very long leg of the journey to our 4pm Calais departure.
Would you say Annecy is worth the less than perfect timings? Or is there somewhere else you would (subjectively!) recommend as a really "worth it" alternative, that's in a better half way position (Beaune, Dijon, or detouring a bit Jura, Besancon)?
In terms of what we are looking for? Either a fab site that's ideally river or lakeside, but not too huge/butlinsy. Or a town / village that's picturesque or atmospheric/characterful.
I suppose we could do 1 night in Annecy and then a basic stopover night near Reims, Troyes, etc.
We can do basic hotels or sites with rentals, but we don't really fancy putting our tent up for 2 nights.
I'm sure we're not the only ones who've been looking for this type of thing - so any ideas would be great!

In my opinion Annecy is quite off the beaten track for a stopover from Provence to Calais - it is further in drive time than it looks on the map. We have done the Annecy to Calais journey many times and don't think it is feasible for a 4pm ferry time. The first part of the journey always takes longer than the distance would suggest due to high traffic volume and slower journey through the Nantua tunnels were there are often hold ups. I thin you would be under pressure even leaving very early. But just my findings others may think differently.

The drive from Lyon which I do a few times a year now, either the airport or Lucenay up to Calais. I do it car solo no trailer no caravan I can leave Lyon at around 9 am and be in Calais for 3.30 4 ish if a hold up occurs anything can happen. Similarly Lyon to Geneva I drive more often that's around an hour and a half. Its the bit from Annecy to any major highway that will slow you down a touch but Id say 9 am you would be pushing it for 4pm no stops and a few laws fractured, Id reckon about 7.30 hrs but that's non stop. Realistically 7 am and away you'd stand a chance but that's kind of not up to sample a hotel breakfast or so on

Thank you both, that's really helpful. Now I'm thinking we won't do Annecy -Calais in one go - we'll either do 1 night Annecy plus 1 further on towards Calais.
Or, we'll do 2 nights in a more halfway ish area.
So, if you could choose, would you detour to Annecy for 24 hours or if not where would be a great alternative?

Personally I think by the time you get to Annecy from Provence you will arrive PM and then be leaving next day so will not have time to see anything. It is too far off the beaten track to make it viable. It is a brilliant area but better to put it on the too do list when you can spare more time. It will be more relaxing to spend a couple of days mid way as you say round Beaune area. Sue
Much depends on when in August if after the 18th ish then you will have more chance of gaining a short term rental for 2 nights but the hotel is still probably going to be best value. To avoid putting tent up for 2 nights I can recommend several around Lyon but suspect youd be better further north say 3 to 4 hours at most from Calais (or Dunkirk if DFDS are still arguing)

I have driven up from Annecy to Calais in one go a couple of times, admittedly I was towing, but always on a Sunday when there are no French trucks on the roads. Annecy is gorgeous, but the traffic can be horrendous and I wouldn't recommend you trying to get to Calais for a 4pm ferry in one day.
