Hi

Travelling from Calais to Sarlat towing a caravan and roof mounted bikes over 2 meters high and would like some advice on the best route. Happy with toll roads but would appreciate any recommendations for a 1 night stop over approx 200 miles in.Thanks

are you wanting a camping stop over or a hotel.
We drove to just south of Paris last year and stayed in an Ibis in rambouillet, nothing glam but good enough for a stop over with fairly secure parking

We use a non-toll route, Calais, Abbeville, Rouen, Evreux, Dreux, Chartres, Orleans, Vierzon, Limoges, Brive, and then Sarlat. This can be combined with using the toll A10 south of Chartres, and continuing on the autoroute instead.

I would guess that towing a caravan, you'll want an overnight site, and there are lots of good overnight sites all the way, from Pont de l'Arche just south of Rouen, Nouan les Fuzelier, Salbris, Vierzon, Vatan, Chateauroux, and many others.

If you'd like a definite named site to head for then I'd be happy to supply names, but most of us keep going until we're ready to stop and then find the nearest site!

Pont de l'Arche - Camping Eure
Nonancourt - Camping le Pre Eglise (also under ST Remy sur Avre)
Orleans (or rather Olivet) - Camping Municipal d'Olivet
Nouan les Fuzelier - Camping le Grand Sologne
Salbris - Camping Sologne
Vierzon - Camping Bellon
Vatan - Camping Rouelle aux Loups
Chateauroux - Camping Rochat le Belle Isle

We've stayed at them all over the years.

Thanks for the reply, I think driving until your ready to stop is probably going to be the best option. Generally do you find the campsites ok with a 1 night stay?

Yes - all but the very large ones are happy enough to deal with one night - and all the ones listed above are geared up for overnight stays.

Your only problem may be if you have a twin axle - some sites don't accept them because of access problems, some don't accept them in 'travellers' are using that route, and some have no problem. Check in advance if you have a large outfit or ask on here and someone will know.

We like it - just a short walk from the village, set in parkland type ground.

Watch your timings! We were on the 9.00 am ferry last year with the plan of hitting Salibris at tea time for the night which is about 300 miles from Calais.

Anyway I made the mistake of going via Paris and spent over 4 hours stationary on the A86 which meant we hit Salibris at 11 pm and ended bunking down at he aire there for the night!
