I'm a newbie & this is my first post - so hi everyone! We're heading down to Sommieres at the end of next week, to Domaine de Massereau. I was just wondering if anyone had recommendations for places worth visiting nearby (within a couple of hours drive). Looking for beach recommendations, nice old towns, scenic drives, markets etc Is Montpellier itself worth a look? Likewise, what should we avoid? Thanks for any advice

Love Montpellier! Have a coffee in the Place de la Comédie and watch the trams go by. There's a multi-storey car park below it, if you're feeling brave. Old town, Botanical Gardens, and the postmodern Antigone area, just past the shopping centre. It's a young town, with lots of students, which gives it a cool vibe.
You can also get a tram to the beach at Palavas. For ruins, I still have an ambition to get to the Cathedrale de Maguelone, out on the marshes. It's quite a walk. Aigues Mortes is a good visit - old fortified town and seaport now landlocked, and the Camargue with black bulls, white horses and pink flamingos is worth drive.
