But Dave, some of us are too old for beaches in the Vendee. We went when we had little children, but not any more.

Now we want historic cities, gardens, restaurants, chateaux, smart shops, art galleries, scenery, cliff walks, cultural festivals, boats out to the islands, and all that Brittany offers.

yes, the Vendee isn't as rugged or 'picture squew' as Brittany, but does have some fantastic places to visit, so is well worth considering. to the OP - decide on what your looking for and want out of a location and Im pretty sure you will find it somewhere in France !! Val is one of the real experts on touring France and may be along soon to offer her experience on the various destinations/regions etc

Brittany is absolutely beautiful, Concarneau, Quimper, St Malo are all very old towns with ramparts & winding streets. The countryside is very rugged, very beautiful & like Cornwall on steroids.

But, La Vendee has the weather & superb beaches. It also has beautiful old towns too. The Ile Noirmoutier is well worth a visit, Clisson especially on market day, is an amazing place - especially if castles on rivers are your thing, Apremont is very picturesque & of course you have all the lake + beach options too.

Between the 2 departments, you have the Loire Atlantique. Again, the weather is better than in Brittany, & Pornic is beautiful & the nearby beaches & coves are very pretty.

You've got the time to do a really good internet trawl & research the 3 areas, all within a few hours of St Malo. Enjoy!

... and then you'll probably decide you want to visit them all which would take care of the next few years!

Campning Streetview is a fun way to get a taste of some sites and the campsite search on here is great for reviews.
