..it all depends on what you mean by decent weather... but then having originally booked for north wales I imagine you would be happy with sunny mid 20's with occasional rainy days- which has been our experience of Brittany for the last 20years we couldn't cope with 35-40 degree heat really so are quite happy with Brittany- we live in Cornwall and would ( controversially ) say it isn't just like here, for a starter It's much quieter in France in August -well where we go anyway, and that's the beauty of France its so big and varied you WILL find something you like...my advice go for it!

We last went to Cornwall in 2008 and after endless number of days sitting in our awning looking at the rain and fog we said "never again" since then we have been to France and our first time was the Loire valley with 10 days of boiling hot clear blue skies followed by cloudier and overcast yet dry days, then we went to the Dordogne for 3 years running which we had very hot weather then a thunderstorm and the odd overcast day always appeared over our 2 wks, then last year after much debate we tried the Vendee on the coast further South than Brittany, we went later on 16th August and had 9 red hot clear blue skies days followed by cloudier days and the odd spot of rain, nothing compared to here in the North West! A lot of it can be down to luck but like someone else said France is so much quieter than the UK even in peak season and if you go later in August its better still.
I have been to Brittany years ago and from memory it is a gorgeous part of France.
Enjoy wherever you end up.

Easy but expensive would be ferry Portsmouth to St Malo and you are within 2hrs drive or less to nice holiday area. Just as cheap but more difficult would be cross Dover Calais and drive about 500miles south so take your pick.

Just come back from Brittany and Normandy weather superb sites superb roads tremendous easy driving no rush and the places are immaculately clean hottest day 36* never below 22* and this was on the Cote D'amour not the south coast of Brittany .Normandy slighltly cooler but kids still in the sea at 8.30 at night will be back next year sailed Portsmouth Caen Trying Poole Cherborgue next time
