To help plan for next year, just wondered if anyone had come across a gem of a campsite on their travels? I would highly recommend the two we stayed at this year:

Camping Floiras in the Lot (review done by Kelper I think already and I will complete a review shortly). This was a small campsite of around 30 pitches mainly on reverside, lovely river swimming and a little restaurant. Mainly seemed to be adults.

Camping Chantemerle near Flora and on the Tarn. This again was on the river with lovely river swimming but was considerably bigger with about 90 pitches. It had a very good restaurant and a beaver colony at the end of the campsite. Very much a family campsite during school hols.
Looking for ideas for next year!

The problem is, one persons Gem, is another persons nightmare, campsite choice is such a personal individual thing.

The campsite we returned to this year down in Frejus, just ticks all our box's, and the couple pitched next to us have been coming back ever since 1985!, I guess they must like the place.

We are currently in camping le helles in Combrit Sainte Marine. Laid back, nice owners, indoor and outdoor pool, 300m to a beautiful beach, 10 minutes into town and the river ferry to Benodet.
A crepe and galette van visits and no rowdiness at night. Pitches are spacious and all surrounded by woods.

Hope you'll be putting a review up for that site, ewen, it sounds very nice.

Lizzie, why not review the site near Flora, then we have it up to date.

I most certainly will Franbee. Currently sitting out under the tarp with some Breton cider listening to the waves breaking on the shore.

I have a little gem to consider. It has been recommended to many since we discovered it back in 2001. It lacks the rolling hills and bastide towns of Provence, but gains points for it's proximity to nature and the beautiful lakes of Lacanau and Hortin.

Le Tedey, is a very different holiday. It will suit anyone wanting peace and quiet, with an opportunity to ride bikes for miles without the endangerment of traffic.

We will be there in 2 weeks. Our 6th visit since we discovered it.

Another GEM is 'Le Premier Pres'in Savigny-Les-Beaune. You can spend a week here to explore the beauty of Burgundy. Again, this is a site we have used many times. The other campsite in the region cannot touch this for location and peace. We did a full week here and loved it.

Roll on the 20th August...

Le Saint- Michelet, Goudargues.(Have just added site to listings)Will do review.

Blissful, Quiet, rambling site on River Ceze. Large pitches on riverside with trees perfect for hammocks. River safe and clear for dam building, swimming and canoeing. Fantastic night life on the river at night!!
Walk to pretty Goudargues, brilliant market, lots in area.
Site mainly French, Dutch. No Brits while we there.

I have now put on the reviews for both my sites but not sure how long they will take to go up. Thanks for the ideas folks and keep them coming. Although true we all like different things it is great to have ideas flagged up without having to do a search when you don't know what you are searching for!

I was going to start a thread a bit like this. Top 10 sites in different categories.

My fave of the moment is Camping La Cascade in Meyrueis in the Cevennes (east of Millau). It's an Eco campsite on a little river called the Jonte, but you have all the canoeing touristy bits on the Tarn close by. It's the only site on that stretch that's across the river from the road.It has normal loos for the faint-hearted as well as composting loos. There's also a bit of a bar restaurant, but not every night. They'll also rent you a solar oven if you're up for it. Lots of walking, masses of nature (wild orchids!) up on the Causses.

But the big thing that makes the site special is that the owners (retired lawyers from Paris, I think) own the cliffs above the site and have allowed bearded vultures to be released into the wild up there. That was truly something special to see!

I'm sure I reviewed it, I've certainly mentioned it before, but I can't find the review.

Another good'un that deserves a mention is the Base Nautique at St Rome sur Tarn. There's a (former Municipal) campsite with large pitches in the trees, and a Base Nautique with canoe hire, a 'guinguette' (outdoor snackery), live bands now and again and a little beach on the Tarn. The sanitaires are good and modern. All this is run by a cheery and enthusiastic young man called Boris and comes at very cheery prices.

In the traditional manner of (ex-) municipals, there's a hardy cluster of elderly French people and their paraphernalia in a bunch of even more elderly caravans. That might put you off if you're after 'manicured', or you might see it (as we do) as local colour.

A few more GEMS for your consideration:

Chateau De Gandspette, Eperlecque - excellent place for a last night before you sail (we do Zeebrugge).

Moulin De Geneste, Uzerche, Limousin. Fabulous site, shma it s not an area we want to holiday in (too much like home). Limousin and the area is so like Yorkshire and in particular where we live which is in Wharfedale near Bolton Abbey.

Le Chantepie, St Hilaire St Florent, Saumur, Loire - great stop over site. It has everything you need.

One to avoid that looks good on paper is Chateau Bertangles. This could be good but it's full of old people in caravans. The type who have plastic tables with plastic table cloths and a potted plant on. oh and they often have a scabby old poodle with them.
We were the only tent on site!
