Hi all, we're going to be within an hour of Avignon next week at Camping Les Cascades, and wondered if it's worth the trip and if anyone had any insider info on good places to park, things to see (apart from the Pont!) etc.? Thanks in advance!

Haven't been there for a few years but the Palace is worth a look at and it he old town inside t he walls is pleasant to wander round. There is parking against the town walls but be sure to lock your car and don't leave anything in view. Someone at the camp site we were on had their belongings stolen , but that was a few years ago as I said!

Few years since we were there too, but we bought a combined ticket for the Popes palace, the bridge and a river trip which was good value.
We were camped on the island in the river, which was a nice and quiet area. Perhaps you could park up near there and walk back into town, if your car is packed up.

Went last year when based at Camping Monplaisir, St Remy de Provence.

There is a very good park and ride by the river off the D225 just NE of the centre. Catch the bus into the old town and have a wander round - well worth seeing.

We didn't bother going on the Pont as you have to pay - we walked sous le pont d'Avignon.

Best thing is a couple of hundred yards past the pont away from town there is a free ferry across the Rhone which gives some interesting views back towards the Palace and Pont. Note you have to get off the ferry at the far side and get back on!

We did Avignon as part of a day trip - other half was Pont du Gard. We'll probably return and do the palce interior at some point.

Were going to Les Cascades early September for a few days - been on our "bucket list" for a few years now.

When we were last there, we went to park against the town walls one evening but virtually all spaces were taken except every 30 yards or so there was a free space next to old van or ancient motorhome with home-made signs saying ' clients seulement'...It took a few moments to understand what the vans and motorhomes were being used for....So you have been warned.

Most definitely yes, i thought it was a fabulous town and wish that we had longer than the day we spent there. I would seriously consider it as a mini break destination. Its such a great place and steeped with history.
Also rather jealous you are going to Les Cascades....great location, great campsite. Dont forget to visit Pont Du gard, its fab.
happy hols

Thank you all for your tips and suggestions! It's so good to have an idea of what to do/where to park, as so often we'll just decide on a whim to visit a town or city and spend a tense hour or so trying to find somewhere to park and then just wander aimlessly around said town, not really knowing if we've seen everything worth seeing! It wasn't so bad when it was just the two of us, but now there are kids in tow it's not so free and easy!!

I'll be sure to avoid the motorhomes!!

I'm also glad you like Les Cascades, Warbis - we've not been before but were tempted by the waterfalls! I'd love to get to the Pont du Gard too - from Google maps it looks like there's a car park and you then walk down to it, is that right?

For the Pont du Gard, drive to Collias, hire a canoe and drift down river to the famous bridge. They collect you with a minibus and take you back to the starting point.

The car park is huge, you then walk down to the river, via the bridge. Take your bathers, its a must to swim there and to jump off the rocks. Bring a picnic and spend the day there.

Across the river, Villeneuve lès Avignon also has some interesting places, if Avignon itself is too busy. Oil mill, castle, etc. and nice houses and cafés.

In the area, Chateauneuf du Pape is worth a cup of coffee; the Roman theatre at Orange is impressive. For wine tasting, and bulk buys for winter, the coop in Vaqueyras.

Les Cascades de Saudadet are fun - I hope you enjoy them.

As for Pont du Gard - do go for a whole day if you wish to get your money's worth as the parking fee was quite steep (although free to enter the site) 18 euros in 2013. So stay for a bit to make the most of it. We loved the overhead misting that occurred in the reception/visitor area - a welcome relief on a hot day!

We didn't stay long enough for a swim - having been to the Cascades earlier - but I do wish we had.

As for Avignon, I would have loved to have danced sur le pont but it was sooooooooooooooooo hot, we drove on, despite that being one of the reasons for our visit.

I suppose my tip is to look on the French tourist board websites and see what they say.

I hope you enjoy your trip.

Pont du Gard - definitely, and also the market in Uzes on a Saturday morning (get there early). If you haven't already 'done' the Gorges de l'Ardeche then do that too!

We loved Avignon, too, and have been twice now (once with my Mum-in-law for her first flight 90th birthday). She loved it too! There is so much to do and see - even a walk around the old wall and the park is interesting, particularly if the peacocks are around.

Have a great trip.
