Hi all, I've just looking for a couple of pointers whilst I'm planning a trip to Siena in Italy for a friends wedding. We'll be travelling with a 2 1/2 year old and a 7 month old (not even born yet!), I'm used to travelling in Western Europe by motorcycle, but the kids are too young for the sidecar yet so I;ll need to take the car with a small trailer tent. Do you know how much I should budget for the toll roads from Dieppe (possibly Calais) to around Grenoble where I'll head for the border? Is it worth (or possible) to get a prepayment tag for the autoroutes tolls? My idea is to drive 2-300 miles then have a 2 night stop over until we get to our destination where we have free camping for 5 days :-) then repeat at different areas on the way back. Are there any sites around paris that has easy access to the train for a day trip? I don't fancy driving into the city. I've never driven/riden in Italy, do they have toll roads like France? Is there a need to book sites in France with a car and trailer (we are going in May so off peak season), I never have done on the bike, but that's obviously smaller? I don't like planning too much and like to see what happens. This one is unusual as we have a destination when we set off. One holiday we crossed Hull/Zeebrugge, covered about 50 miles into Belgium then got a map (OK satnav) out and randomly pointed at it to decide where to go - you get the idea!

Interested in this, as we're intending on a holiday by Lake Como next year. Concrete tent by the lake, but still. As a result we'll be working to a definite plan.
Almost certainly will be from Hull, morning in Bruges, then south through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, and Italy. O/n stops on way down in Metz and Lucerne, spending time in each, and similar coming back.

Hi reggit, welcome to the forum! You'll find masses of useful information on here if you know where to look!
There have been dozens of threads about tolls and the Sanef tag for prepayment. I was hoping someone with more nous than me would come on and give you a link! However, you can use the yellow "search" button above your original post. Just type in "sanef tag" and the thread will appear - likewise for cost of tolls, type "tolls in France".
There's a good site in Paris called Camping International Maisons Laffitte which is close to a station. We stayed there with the kids many years ago, but there are plenty of up to date reviews on this site - just click on yellow box "camp site search" at the top, for info on hundreds of sites all over UK and Europe.
Yes, there are toll roads in Italy, usually the main autoroutes. Italian non-toll roads can be a bit bumpy, we found!
As you are going in May you will find the ACSI card
very useful - it allows you to use an extensive list of camp sites at a reduced rate outside of the main summer holiday season. Prices range from 12 to 18 euros (in 2015.) You probably won't need to book ahead, but as you are travelling with little ones it might give you peace of mind to do so!
I hope you have a great trip.

ATMB gives you the best value tag ... whether it's worth it for a single trip which is only partly in France, you must judge ... the french tags only work in France.
Via Michelin will allow you to look at different route suggestions and get timings and toll charges.
Once you decide on your route, then campsite options narrow considerably.

The toll roads in Italy are generally fine although not as smooth as France. They are also cheaper. Another advantage is that once on the toll road you only pay when you exit be that 10 miles or 200 miles unlike France where you pay every so often.

Highly recommend the campsite just outside of Paris. We stayed there a couple of years ago with our kids and very easy 20 min train into Paris plus it's in a lovely picturesque suburb!
Which one? .... Versailles?

Except on the bits round Milan where you seem to pay every 200 yards!
