I'm taking my caravan to the south of Spain via Santander in the middle of September. The ferry arrives at Santander at about 18:15 in the evening.
I'm unsure whether I should find a site nearby (within an hours drive) and have an overnight, and then drive through the heat of the day, the following day to my next overnight. Or whether coming off of the ferry I should take advantage of the cooler evening air and drive for several hours, the problem being then where to park up from about midnight to get a few hours sleep.
N.B. My original plan had been to drive about 200 miles then overnight, then another 200 and another overnight again and finish off the journey the following day, hadn't thought to look and see what time the ferry gets in.
Any thoughts and advice appreciated.
N.B. Thanks to everyone who has responded to my other posts over the last couple of weeks. Advice is always welcome - even if I don't remember to take it.
Thanks
Geoff

Unless your body-clock can effectively switch from night to day sleeping, or you are sharing the driving, I'd stick to a normal routine.
Sure, night time driving will be cooler, and the roads less busy ... especially if you hit Madrid round about 2 to 3 in the morning.
Mid Sept temperatures in Madrid can hit the low thirties, whereas late September rarely gets into the 30's.
So neither will, exactly, roast you!
I am sure in september will be great (20-25 degrees depending where you stay.
You wont get roasted , do not worry as in the north of Spain can be even a little cold...
This summer was specially warm in Spain but I do not think will be the same in september or even october, always you are not in the south of Spain, obviously!

It won't be that hot and I'm sure your car has aircon. You are on hol, find a campsite when you get off the ferry and drive daytimes, I would.
Folk tend to think UK heatwave conditions which are invariably close and oppressive. High 20s, early 30s in southern Europe is generally pleasant and fairly fresh. It has to climb towards the 40s to get a bit much. Average for Sept is more like mid to high 20s. Very nice.
Stick to your body clock and when you feel safe to drive. It won't be that horribly hot. Many places around Santander and Bilbao to enjoy if you feel the mood.

I do the Santander to Calella slog. I'm fortunate that I work shifts, so regularly have to go a full day then work a full night. My preference is to sleep for the last couple of hours on the ferry. Drive until about 4-5am depending on fatigue and pull into a services to get my head down for 4-5 hrs then continue driving to the site. I do stops every couple of hours for fuel and coffee, walk and stretch. I find I can cover many more miles through the night. I use the Toll roads, yes may cost about 60 euros but no trucks, silly junctions or traffic lights. Services or picnic areas every 15 - 25 miles.
