You will need to get your dog vaccinated against rabies at least one month before you travel. It is no longer a requirement to have a blood test to see that the vaccine has stimulated immunity, but we did.
Make sure that the microchip number and dates are correct in the passport. We took our MIL with here dog two years ago and a French vet spotted that one digit in the number was incorrect. Fortunately we had gone to the vets early (5 days before travel and were able to sort things out having phoned DEFRA in the UK.
Take your dog to a French vet between 5 days and 24 hours before travel. They will check that the dog is fit to travel and witness that an approved wormer is administered.
I would advise going to the vet in the town dear where you are staying 3-4 days before you leave.
It is advisable to apply a product such as Advantix to protect against Leishmaniosis which caught from mossies and sandflies prior to going abroad.

France is a really good place to take a dog, but just check that he'll be able to go on the nearby beaches to whatever site you choose.
It may help (if you don't know already) to get an ACSI Card (www.campingcard.co.uk). They offer several sites in and around La Foret with one site at 12 euros, several at 14 euros and the remainder at 16 euros. This covers the cost of a pitch, two adults, car and caravan, awning, electricity, and one dog.

May I also suggest you check with Brittany Ferries which ship you will be on for the Plymouth/Roscoff crossing. Some of those ships have kennels, some do not , but none of the ships on that route have cabins which your dog can share with you.

We used a pet friendly cabin on the Brittany Ferries Le Havre Economie Service, which used the Etretat, which (for us) was very good value and got us home when services from Calais were being disrupted.

There's a vet on the outskirts of Concarneau which we used last year for the dogs worming tablet. We were staying at LA Foret at the time.

The blood test can be taken 30 days plus after the vaccination but is no longer a legal requirement and their fore saves you the cost.

Your dog needs to be vaccinated at least 21 days before travel and blood test is not required.
I'm not sure that getting your dog treated 5 days before your return is good advice any more,if you are delayed through industrial action you could run out of time and need to repeat the vist to the vet in France!

To get the Passport just go to your vet and get the Rabies injection 21 days before you want to travel, they will see you again to give you the Passport-check it all well!
Any French Vet is ok as all you need is the Worming tablet and the paperwork stamped & signed, our dog was seen to about 3 days before we travelled.
The Rabies injection should last 3 years. Our dog has just had her booster!

We do it overnight, our dog normally sleeps all night so it's no different than being at home.

The Thursday evening overnight crossing from Plymouth is normally on the "Pont Aven" which does have on board kennels If that is what you prefer.
