As we're away for a while we thought getting one of these will be useful.
Do you get one automatically when you join The Camping and Caravanning Club?

Is anyone else a member?

TIA,

Hey there,

I don't think you get one with the C&C club - I'm a member and have just sent away to the RAC for a card, its about £10 I think.  Main reason I'm getting one is to not have to use passports for ID at camp grounds.

Nick

Thanks for the quick reply nick. I presume you have to be an RAC member to obtain one from them?

Anywhere else we could get one from? (tenting rather than caravaning.)

Not sure actually, I did have to put my membership number on the application form though so assume yes.  Basic membership for a year is about £30 and if you join C&C club you can get the RAC Arrival breakdown cover in Europe which is only £80 for 180 days cover, quite a savings.

Unfortunately the cover is only for 90 days at a time. We'll be away for 150. (we've struggled to find car insurance which doesn't have a similar clause!)

Might be worth getting a years RAC membership just to get the card however.

Sorry yes you're right is only 90 days.  We're travelling round europe for six months from next sunday and had similar problems getting cover.  What we did is get breakdown cover from downunder insurance - they do a one year policy for around £90 but as you'd imagine it is really not loaded with extras, just the bare minimum that we'd need.  As we've just had a recon engine put in our van we also got the RAC 90 days to cover us for the first three months, just to be safe.  Its worth speaking to RAC about cover for longer periods as I'm sure I had a conversation with a guy there who quoted me about £440 for 180 days which was a large discount due to being a C&C club member.  I've been making notes of insurance companies from various bulletin boards and came across these two which might be worth a try:

Colonade Insurance at Liversedge, West Yorkshire do, for a year £120, thats UK and Europe, but the bonus is that they will do 6 month stints in Europe.  Also Lynbrook Insurance 01704822249 apparently offer full comprehensive cover, eu breakdown and leagal cover up at competitive rates depending on the age of vehicle.

Nick,
That info is brilliant! Thanks. Exactly what i've been searching for with regards to insurance. I'd found Liverpool Victoria but the quote was quite high. Was hoping to at least find another to see if I can haggle them down. Will give those numbers a try.

We're off two weeks today! :) Which way you heading?

No problems - glad to help!  Hopefully someone there will be able to do you a deal.  We're doing the classic route really: france, spain, portugal, italy, sicily, greece, turkey then back through eastern europe.  A leaky roof at the moment is my greatest worry but hopefully we won't see rain for many a month.  Enjoy your trip!

Definitely get the Camping Card.  Without one, campsites will want to hold your passport when you book in.

Nick,
Sounds a good trip, we're doing Italy, Sardinia, Croatia, Slovenia, austria, germany, spain and france. 5 months isn't enough!
Hope you have a great trip!

Pixie, where did you get your CCI from?

Cheers,
Rich & Cat

You can get a camping card from the Camping and Caravanning Club. It is free if you take out their travel insurance, otherwise it costs £4.50. I have also had one from the RAC, just because it was easier to do an on-line application with them, but I think it cost a pound or so more. We have the RAC Arrival annual policy via the CCC, which may not be the cheapest, but gives total peace of mind, year round, in the UK or in Europe, with the caravan or without. On the rare occasions that we have had to use it, we have found them very efficient.

Chrissie,
Thanks for the reply. If you can definately get one from the C&CC then we'll join and get one through there.

The RAC Arrival policy looks good for the future, alas not for this trip.

Cheers,
Cat & Rich
