I'm looking at booking a very popular site in France for next July/August. I've been given a quote by Select Sites but it's about £300 more than the calculation I've made for booking Brittany Ferries and the campsite direct. The trouble is, I'm using 2015 prices for the campsite and their bookings don't open until 20th October. Should I wait and book on 20th Oct but risk not getting a pitch directly ( or indeed the sailing I want) or just go ahead and take the Select Sites booking even though its so much more expensive. I'm really keen to go to this particular site. Help! Any advice welcome.

Due to zero inflation in €zone, pitch prices unlikely to rise next yr so if the specific pitch is worth another £300 to you then spend the extra £300 but only if you feel you might spend the holiday consumed with pitch envy & hatred for the lucky encumbent of the pitch you covet.
I'm quite taken with some premium pitches with gas BBQs, fridges and furniture, but the fridges can be hired separately on the standard pitches anyway and we managed without the other stuff on a different campsite last year. I'm more worried about getting any pitch at all as I really love the look of the site and its reviews but I don't know if I want to spend £300 to reduce that worry. Hmm, it's tricky.
If it was me I would book direct with the campsite and if it was booked would choose another site., but thats me, I would not want to spend £300 pound more going with a company.
We always used to go with Canvas Holidays until we started booking direct with the campsites which is a much better option re quality of accommodation and prices, but would not like to comment on pitches only.
Last year we booked a chalet at Les Alicourt resort which was superb and in a far superior position to Canvas and Eurocamp

I always book with the sites direct however big or small, why pay the middle man? It has always worked for me including specific pitches in the middle of summer. As for ferries there is always a bargain to be had by calling them direct. The £300 is another holiday 😉
