Dogs aren't allowed on the main beaches at Royan in the summer months.
We were on the Ile D'oleron this summer with 2 dogs and there were very few restrictions.
It was an easy enough drive from the laid back Ile to the bustle of of Royan for a day trip - they are very different considering the proximity and I really enjoyed both.
------------- It's only an expensive hobby when it's parked on your Drive....use it, love it , live it.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

Usually June time so not peak season.

As before, the Beausoleil site Berriow mentioned should fit the bill, an easy walk to the Bonne Anse, which has miles of sand without restriction. There were lots of dogs when we were there in September. Takes the ACSI card, so the dog will be included in the price. Check it out on Google Earth!
I would agree with others who say the Vendee is good for a first time,. The Vendee would not be as scenic as other parts of France, but has fantastic beaches, which may interest your kids more.
The only thing I would say is that if you intend to go to the beach and it would be a shame not to, then try to pick a site that is walkable to one, as it can be difficult to get parked, unless you can go early.
