Designation for motorways. AP means toll. A means no toll. I generally stay off the toll roads, the N road that runs alongside is traffic free apart from trucks & if you are towing, speed limit is same as truck.

Hi Beecherk,
where are you stopping on the way down from Bilbao?
I would avoid Madrid as the roads around the center can get very very busy.
which route do you intend taking south?

And don't forget the old chestnut requiring you to display yellow and red marker boards on the rear of your caravan if you are 12 metres long or more.
See the Caravan Club website for full details.

In Spain beware of Spanish traffic laws, particularly on motorways.
Always use dipped lights when going through road tunnels irrespective of how long/short they are- you can get a ticket
Always indicate when changing lanes on a motorway- its compulsory
Do not drive in flip flops- its illegal- and yes people do!
You have to wear a top when driving

Cyclist are a law to themselves, give them plenty of room
Speed cameras are normally signposted but Spanish police are using mobile cars/vans more often now.

So what actually is a flip flop? Is it quite literally a flip-flop or is it any shoe that isn't attached to your foot?
Normally I live in my Crocs and more often than not wear them as a slip on shoe rather than having the heal strap locating the heal area of my feet.......... are these legal?

Flip flops are a rubber sandal that fits between the toes of your feet, they do not have any back to them.
I wear crocs but with the strap on the back which I think are legal but you would have to investigate further.
Just search the web for flip flops in Spain and there are loads of articles - which are correct? -who knows!

In Spain driving barefoot or in any sort of totally backless shoes is not allowed. Adjust Crocs accordingly before entering that county.

Indicating before changing lanes on a motorway is required everywhere, isn't it? If not, any decent driver should anyway!

Kelper,
you are quite right, however in Spain they will fine you if you don't indicate whereas in eg the UK the police may warn you but not necessarily automatically fine you

What does 'short stops' mean
Personally I would not stop overnight at any service station in Europe

Most things have been covered....

Donīt forget the speed limit for towing in Spain is 80km/h (having said that I always set the cruise for 90 so as not to be in the way of the wagons and never had a problem in many thousands of kms)

You also need two red warning triangles and a hi vis jacket for each vehicle occupant.

It will take you 10 - 11 hours actual driving to get to Pilar de la Horadada (Lo Monte?) from Bilbao so you can base your stops on that, depending on how long you want to drive.

Madrid or Zaragoza, not a lot between them. As mentioned by another poster, Madrid can get busy. Preferred for me, Zaragoza. Tolls for the first part from Bilbao but then toll free.

I have overnighted countless times in the services and laybays in Spain (and France for that matter) and never had a problem. Not guaranteed of course...

Have a great trip!

I'm heading down to Denia via Zaragoza in about 3 weeks, I will let you know about it when I get back.

Thanks for the heads up on driving with no shoes on, this is a bit of a habit of mine!
