Last year was our first camping trip abroad and we had a fab 10 days in I'll definitely France.
Next year (2016) we are thinking of either the west or south of France. We live in Dorset and are on a budget so any tips for sites or travel will be so much appreciated from you guys.
We've been looking at using dfds again as even with the miles and fuel the cost out way the brittany ferry costs from Portsmouth so may need stop over plans on route we have a tent.
Can't wait or your help

Depending on what time of year you'll be going, it would be worth getting an ACSI card. You get some excellent sites for between 12 and 18 euros a night (this year - we haven't got next year's yet). I think you can only use the card until mid/late July though, then the prices go up to normal.
No probs with stopover campsite, theres one in most towns on your route from Calais/Dunc to SW France. Campsites are well signposted so easy to find. You can start from home early morning & stop in the afternoon/evening when you are tired.
Cheapest sailings on Dover routes are early hours, midnight onwards. It's a good time to travel, ferries & roads are quiet.
If you have a large tent then take a small popup or similar for overnight stops & also handy for last night at main camp as you can take down your large tent in the afternoon when it's dry.
You can do much of the route to SW France on reasonable roads with minimum toll as well. Save even more by filling up with cheaper supermkt fuel & buy food & drink there for the day rather than paying out for cafes.
I notice you've reviewed Les Courtilles du Lido - which was a site we used to stay at on our travels up and down through France when we used routes near Paris. I take it you've got children (three from your review) so a cheaper site would be obviously a good idea, and it's worth looking at the ACSI Card website (www.campingcard.co.uk). If you can go the last two weeks in August, then there are 84 sites which accept the card then and offer free places for children under 6 (but possible discounts for older children too). You could combine a week at 'full price' with a week at the ACSI rate and save some money.
Have you any 'end' destinations in mind in the West or South? Are you looking for beaches, or would a lovely riverside site, with river swimming and great pools do instead. I'm thinking there are a lot of lovely sites which are more central then the West and won't have you thinking 'But we're going back on ourselves' once you get to France.
There are toll-free routes, too, which help to save us enough to pay for all our campsites for a fortnight.
I'd second the tips about supermarket fuel (which is very cheap in France at the moment)

Given where you live it might be worth pricing up the Poole-Cherbourg ferry service as you live a long day from Dover and it could give you a day or two extra days on your holiday.

We're thinking maybe the La Rochelle area. We like sites like coutilles du lido not to big or commercial. Not worried about being at a beach as we live by the Sea (Portland). I'll defo look into the ACSI cards

We looked at crossing from Poole/Portsmouth and although we would save miles the cost is ridiculous cheapest at the moment around £600 compared to £190 with a P&O crossing in Dover, we both drive so can share the drive and would prefer to pay to stay at stop over sites rather than pay the ferry company. We have Vivaro crew van hense the prices
