If you are stopping at the Bruges campsite then take your bike, it's a couple of miles from the town centre.

Les, I don't know how long you have booked for, but most people reckon two days is all you need to see the sights in Bruges.

You can use the trains to get to Ghent in half an hour, and Antwerp and Brussels in about an hour - or are you planning to take your motorhome to those other cities?

I don't know which campsite or aire you are booked at - you didn't say - but I doubt if you will need an adaptor. However as they only cost about five pounds and last a lifetime, one day somewhere an adaptor will be useful. Put one under the bed.

That's about 2miles from town centre, theres a bus if you don't want to walk & a large supermkt within walking distance of campsite. Last time we stopped there receptionist was very helpful for local info & spoke fluent English. You are in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium so English is quite widely spoken.

...or Ostend or Blankenberge where you can use the tram for almost the entire Belgian coast.

Hi, we've stayed here a few times and it's really handy for everything. You can buy a bus ticket with ten trips from the site office or the garage across the road and the stop is only a short walk away. The supermarket opposite the site which actually has a pretty good restaurant if you fancy an easy evening. There's a swimming pool up the road too.

My best bit of advice about Bruges....

Expect to pay over the odds and you won't be dissappointed :)

The boat trips on the canals and the horse and carriage trips are a must.

If you are going on the horse and carriage then (if there are just 2 of you) look for another couple to share the trip with - the trips are NOT based on the number of people in the carriage - just the cost of the trip itself - but do not do this in the view of the drivers - they don't like it.

Another point to note (bitter experience with the kids) is that there are no free toilets in Bruges - and all the ones in restaurants are guarded by "madam" who demands a fee.

We loved the city - it just costs a fortune to do anything - like most places really - but Bruges seems to excel at it.

I've been told Ghent is nicer and less commercialised - but haven't been there so can't comment.

Bruges is a gem, but I'd go out of season. It's one of those special places like York or Venice.

If you like art, I'd recommend you take in the 'St Ursula's shrine' reliquary by Hans Memeling. It's exquisite.

Jewel-like in real life.

Ghent is nice but nothing like as special.

We were advised to stay in Ghent and travel to Brugge, instead.
Ghent is much cheaper and less crowded but just as beautiful and historic. You can get to Brugge very easily by train.
Can recommend Camping Blaarmesen in Ghent.

We love Brugge - if you want a great way to see the city check out legends of Bgrugge free walking tour - runs twice a day and is excellent - it's free you just tip the guide if you enjoy it
Ypres is well worth a visit to see the menin gate and the last post

I know it's a bit pricey but we finally did the Segway tour last time we were there and it was well worth the money. They are very easy to handle and it was ridiculously good fun!! I haven't been on the walking tour but will definitely try that next time. I guess Bruges is like any other city really in that you have to be careful where and how you spend your money. The first rule for anywhere I would say is to never frequent any establishment around a square or overlooking the sea if you're on a budget!
