Dear readers,
This summer the family and I are hoping to drive to Croatia for a three/four week summer holiday with our trusty old Conway Trailer Tent. Reviews of camp sites are sparse. Has anyone made the drive and how was your experience when you arrived? Any tips on camping in Croatia with a four year old whilst still pleasing our teenage daughter flying in and out for a week or two in the middle!?!
Kind regards
Aled

We've done it several times. We find the best route is through Germany, Austria and Slovenia though you will need to buy vignettes to use the motorways in Austriavand Slovenia and plan stop offs on the way down depending on how much of a fast/leisurely drive you want to make it.
The country has a long coastline with offshore islands and a fairly mountainous interior that sometimes starts not far from the coast. There are hardly any sandy beaches. Most are shingle, stone, rock or even concrete in places (not as bad as it sounds) but the result is amazingly clear water to swim in. My one tip would be to take swimming shoes, either the sort worn for sufing or jelly sandal things. Some of the inland scenery is stunning, especially in the national parks.
Each area is slightly different in atmosphere so it might pay to do some homework before you go. Don't overlook the islands. They are some of our favourite destinations and are easily reached by ferry and there is even a bridge from the mainland to Krk.
As everywhere the campsites vary from small family run to large complexes with pools, children's clubs, entertainment, shops etc. Most are up to international standards and we have only ever come up against one that has been unacceptable and we are reported that to ACSI. Have you looked at for information? Some of the campsites are owned and run by big companies that have their own websites and brochures and may have special deals. Or pick an area and email the local tourist office. They will usually send brochures etc.
I agree with chrisandsadra re routes and beaches etc. We have only been to one site which is at Fazana near Pula on the Istrian coast so not too far to travel once your into Croatia. Its called BI-village , a very large site but dont be put off by that as once your there it doesn,t seem that big, there are about 6 Toilet blocks so your never too far away from the facilities, some of the pitches can be a bit of a walk to the beach but its well worth it, its a lovely walk into Fazana along the coast about 25 mins walk with lovely resturants and Ice cream Palours.there are some lovely towns to visit along the coast too. There are 3 pools with lots for the children to do.
There are some excellent camp sites in Croatia, to suit all tastes - small and quiet, or large with plenty of activities and entertainment for all ages. It gets very busy in July and August so advanced booking is recommended.
There area number of sandy beaches in the Nin/Zaton area, which would be ideal for your 4-year old as the water is calm and shallow. There's a large family-friendly site with beach access at Zaton Holiday Resort, and a smaller, quieter site nearby, Autocamp Perros, both in the ACSI book.
Croatia has a lot of music festivals in the summer which might appeal to your teenager, and she could fly to Zadar which is nearby. There are details of festivals in the Rough Guide to Croatia.
