It will be my first trip to France with my new caravan..

Seems that French gas is much cheaper than UK calor, and I am drawn towards the 5kg "Le Cube" propane tanks which are available everywhere...most caravan tanks are Butane in France due to regulations.

Do I need a French address to register and purchase my first tank? All the forms I've seen ask for a French postcode..

All service stations sell one sort or another, buy one at the first station on landing in France. The one I buy is the 10kg red bottle, costs about 30 eurs, but that includes a regulator. last year it was 18 euros for a refill.

Is the 10kg red bottle Antargas Calypso?

If it is...it's butane, which I always thought was a bit of a problem if you travel outside the summer months...

Not a massive price difference if you already have Calor bottles & 2 by 6kg would last you the French trip. I've got a Le Cube 6kg butane which I've had for yrs. Found it at a campsite so dunno about initial purchase but refill is 18€ & 28€ for initial bottle purchase.

I can't really see a problem though, just give address of campsite you are stopping at, supermkt staff won't be that worried, I doubt.

Regulator size is 27mm clip for both butane & propane Le Cube so if you have bulkhead regulator on your caravan then you will need 27mm clip to pol adaptor for pol pigtail.

All makes of small French bottle 5-6kg come in both butane & propane, regulator sizes are same 27mm clip for Cube & 20mm clip for other makes. If you are using bottle top regulators then they come in 28mb butane & 37mb propane.

Larger see thru bottles aimed at caravanners are butane but most economical are the larger 13kg bottles often with very low or even free initial bottle purchase. Oddly enough these bottle will fit screw in regulator for Calor 4.5kg butane bottle but obviously can only be used on butane bottle not propane.

Unless you use a lot of gas, is it really worth it for the small saving, by the time you've bought the adaptors, and purchased the cube in the first place?

If you take your own full bottle then it should last a fair amount of time unless you're using it for heating, cooking, and heating water every day. Don't forget if you do buy a French one you'll have to lug around your own gas, and the new Le Cube bottle.

A lot of people who caravan in Europe use electricity for heating and hot water, perhaps gas for cooking, or even (like we do) a two ring electric hob and a small size portable oven which we use outside in the awning.
