Hi all, looking for some advice!

We want to go to Cala Llevado near Tossa de Mar (for about 9 nights), and Camping Les Cascades in the Ardeche (for about 7 nights).

Last year we did Les Cascades first, then Cala Llevado, then up to the Dordogne, and then stopped in a chalet at Parc de Fierbois in the Loire to break up the journey back to Calais. Due to travelling slightly earlier in August this year, the cost of a chalet is too much for us, so we'll probably be looking for somewhere to pitch our tent for 3/4 nights instead.

We've been thinking of bombing straight down to Spain, staying in a hotel near Avignon on the way, then coming back up to Les Cascades. However, I can't find anywhere I'd like to stay between Les Cascades and Calais!

How would you do it? Where would you go? I feel like my head is spinning trying to work out how to make it all happen!

I should say we'll be travelling with a 13 year old and 4 year old, and plan to be away from 7th August to 27th August.

Thanks in advance!!

What about somewhere like Chateau l'Eperviere in Burgundy - it's not far from the autoroute, has an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, a bar and restaurant on site, and gets some good reviews

Or a bit further north, Lac d'Orient at Mesnil Saint Pierre, near Troyes? Reviews here

Have a bit longer in Spain. + a bit longer at Les Cascades, then head straight home with one overnight in a nice hotel with a pool and a restaurant somewhere/ anywhere on the way north.

I was just going to come back on and say the same thing. There are some lovely family run auberges, at very reasonable prices, with safe parking.

This one, for example, is £106.00 for four of you - more than a campsite, but so much easier (especially if it's raining) - has a pool and sauna, and breakfast is included. It's near the canal, if you have bikes with you. Why not save the hassle of putting up your tent again, and enjoy a luxury end to your holiday.

Family B and B, Burgundy

Hi
Can you tell me the directions you took towing caravan to Camping Cala Llevado Tossa De Mar as we have a towing large van single axle, and am also disabled although my partner isn't but they dont like towing, its just I am concerned about terrain to camp site from motorway after E15 / A7. We have 4 x 4 Ford Kuga which is normally a breeze to tow with. We want to go end May 17
Thanks
Jeff

We have an unwritten rule never to travel at the weekend. We broke that rule last year and regretted it. On the way home to Euro tunnel from St Augustin near Royan we were delayed by 3 hours. Once for 1 1/2 hours at a toll while people used small change to feed the machines!
When planning journey's I find the satnav a great aid. I limit the driving time to approx. 6 hours and add 2+ hours for breaks, lunch, etc.
I would think you can get closer to home without to much trouble, thus reducing the driving time on Sunday 27th.
As well as trying to pick a good campsite, I look for places of interest to visit. Campsite web pages sometimes show this and Google Earth is a great source.
This year on our way home we are going to stop at Gien near Orleans. We plan to visit Chateaux Guedelon, etc in the area as well as laze on the campsite before heading home.

The other downer to travelling at weekends, Dandyman Bob is the fact that it can be almost impossible to find parking with a caravan at an aire from about 11.50 to 3pm while everyone on the road stops for lunch. Believe me, they will park anywhere!

Freedom is a light caravan and an open road.

I rather like weekend travel in France as lorries are banned on summer weekends from 7 am to 7pm on Saturdays and from 10 pm on Saturdays to 10 pm on Sundays. Yes, the motorway Aires are clogged up with parked trucks but the roads are free of them.

One thing I have changed my mind on is the virtue of toll tags. My daughter and SIL have one and were not held up at the tolls like we were. It also saves needing change and getting close to the ticket machines so that SWMO can reach the slot.
