Having now ruled out the car train from Paris - Toulouse mainly because we are taking our dog. 5-6 hrs on a passenger train is to long for him to sit with his legs crossed. We could leave him with my parents but we have had some great holidays with our former pooch decision has been made he's coming!

My question is we would like to travel as far as we can south. The driving would be shared and we would be crossing the channel earlier morning. So a nights sleep would be missed. We did the same last year to chamonix and managed 450 miles before we stopped. We where knackered but shared driving helped.

Did wonder if stopping at Bordeaux was a good option been reading that the ring road can cause some traffic snarl ups!

So any suggestions for a stop over would be very great full. Don't mind premiere class type hotels always found them good value for money.

Many thanks x

Use this to help plan where you would like to stop

Via Michelin

It will give an indication of time taken. We always add an hour for stops (how many depends upon your bladder) and traffic problems.

Route is Calais, Rouen, Chartres, Orleans, Vierzon, Limoges, Toulouse. You don't go anywhere nr Bordeaux. It's mostly motorway & plenty toll free. Halfway might be Chateauroux, theres an Ibis hotel a couple of minutes off first A20 exit to town.

I used to live south of Toulouse and that is definitely the route to take. In all honesty I wouldn`t even plan in advance where to stop, just stop when you have had enough driving for one day, there won`t be any shortage of budget hotels on the way.

We stayed in the Ibis at Chateauroux ten days ago, and I can confirm that it's very near to the autoroute, and very convenient for any number of restaurants. Cheap too, cost us just €24 plus breakfasts of 5 euros each.

It was much much much better that the Premiere Classe at Nevers last night - we've vowed 'never again. The SatNav 'found' it for us after an even more disastrous choice where we didn't choose to stay after seeing the room!

We're currently in a wonderful modern suite in a private house in St Omer, which is costing the same as the disaster of yesterday.

That's the route I would use too - very simple and straightforward and not too costly on tolls.

I was just thinking overnight, and remembered you were heading for Pyrenees Natura, so going via Bordeaux is perfectly possible. Google maps shows that the quickest route is via Bordeaux.

Sorry can't help with overnight stops in the Bordeaux area - it's about thirty five years since we were there!

However, the above route is a good one - nice scenery, straightforward, and can be done free of tolls or you can hop on and off the autoroute as you wish.

If anyone would have told me to go that route Val I would never have believed them, but having looked at Google maps you are right as usual.

Thanks for all your replies it was viamichelin that gave us the Bordeaux route and looked the quickest but I'm liking the route opensauce suggested it's just the time.

Guess we have to make a decision.

Val may I ask what route you would take?

Personally I would go down through Toulouse, because we like more interesting countryside to drive through, and the western route through Poitiers, Bordeaux, etc., is flatter and less interesting.

But we all prefer different things.
