Has anyone had an thoughts about what would happen the pet passport if we were to leave the EU? Would we have to back to the dark ages of quarantine? This is a concern to me as my dogs come to France with us every year.

Like all the other questions about the referendum and the results, I don't think anyone can answer you with any certainty! Like everything else it will depend on how we vote, how the subsequent outcome is handled, and on thousands of individual negotiations about each 'policy' or agreement.

If I remember correctly the whole complicated quarantine/ 6 month wait thing was a UK issue, they were much more more relaxed in France. I would be very surprised if we went backwards on the pet passports if we decide to exit the EU. Just my humble opinion but I can see no reason for our government to change things.

As badger54 says, it was a UK thing. With respect, I think this is the least of our "worries" - as Val hints!

Tourism is one of France's biggets earners so highly unlikely the French will do anything to jeopardise. This fits in with the many other scare stories being drummed up by the EU "stay in" party. No prizes for guessing which way we will vote!

I thought this was a genuine question rather than a scare story (and both sides of the debate are using them!).
As I recall the pet passport was nothing to do with France or the EU but was a GB (not sure about NI, so maybe not UK) means of avoiding the need to quarantine and, as such, I can't see it being affected, whichever way the vote goes.

Pet passports are an EU regulation.

The pet passport is an EU thing and is regarded as an official registration document. However,it may be used differently in different countries.
I cannot see any reason why the status of the passport should change if the UK were to leave the EU.

I cannot see any reason for the pet passport scheme to change. A ban on pet travel existed because there were no reliable vaccines against rabies and the risk of the disease was high on the near continent before the scheme. Their are a few nasty gut worms abroad which are not present in the UK which is why a wormer has to be given before return to the UK.

The vaccine has been around for many decades as I can remember it being compulsory by law for us to have our dogs vaccinated against rabies in the fifties in Africa. The dog then had a tattoo on the inside of its ear. A dog with no tattoo would be put down in most instances due to the risks.

Although not relevant to the original question, it is one thing to use the best available vaccine in a country already riddled with rabies but the Veterinary Inspectorate were not convinced of their reliability to keep the disease out of the UK until recently. Had the nasty disease spread to these shores the policy was, and probably still is to kill allwildlife in a 5 mile radius of infection.
Regards Bob.

Rabies was eradicated from the UK in 1902 but is still carried by bats in the UK but is rare.

If that is the policy then someone deserves to be shot. If that was applied in Africa, all wildlife would have been eradicated years ago.

I think it would still be similar.
Going in to France, or other EU countries are less strict than back in to UK.
I'm bringing my dog in to the uk, later in the year, from the Middle East. They don't have dog passports here. But as long as all your paperwork is done, you don't need to put them in quarantine.
My dog has had all her vaccines and microchip, then a blood test to check for levels of rabies immunity (expensive! Blood sent to Germany for testing) as long as we alway keep up her yearly jabs, she is fine to travel straight in to uk x

My only concern is if the anti passports for pets lobby have their way.
There have been innumerable articles in the press about the dangers associated with dogs coming into the UK from abroad. The usual suspects seem to be owners of quarantine kennels whose livelihood was threatened when the Pet Passport was introduced. Recently, there has been concern about the change in timing of the tapeworm medication. Hopefully, these doomsayers will not get their way.
