ok guys its time to bite the bullet we have an old caravan,we will upgrade in about 2 months time to new ish van and 4x4 sill jury out on discovery 3 or range rover sport my choice lol van is hers most likely unicorn vigo 20014,here is my question we have been left some money and would like to take car and van over to spain near alacanti,to look at some property whilst there,we have a dog and would like to spend 2 days in france then on to spain,we have about 2 weeks or so for the trip,any ideas for france?then on to spain thanks doug

Dugie - can we ask some questions that might help give better advice?

Which port are you sailing from? And what dates are you planning on travelling? This extra information will help recommendations for routes and sites because in peak season things may well be different.

Is it possible to take just a little longer? It's a long way to Alicante (1,148 miles from Calais - plus your journey to and from home in this country) and each leg of the journey will probably take four days at each end of your journey, leaving not a lot of time to look at properties.

thanks val we are waiting on probate that should be about 2 months time for all moneys to clear,as we have a dog looks likely chanell tunnel,and where we store our old van will be a try out before our trip for our new outfit,we are flexi on the journey time,so may time ish,think its about 18 hours to spain so could be one stop in france or maybe 2?we would be traveling from near Northampton,we also have a house to sell part of the probate so this will only be a look at properties and then another trip back to finalise what ever we see there so until we get any money we are unable to book any thing concreate thanks doug

Good luck with the house hunting. We bought a house in France about this time last year!

You might want to look at the ACSI Card website (www.campingcard.co.uk) for help with sites. You can have a look on the map to find sites where you think you'll want to stop.

There is also a website which shows campsites within 15km of the major routes through France and you can access the information through Archie's Camping website (http://www.archiescampings.eu/) which gives you campsite POI's for thousands of sites in Europe.

AT the moment P and O are making a 'Pets travel free' on their Ferry Fortnight offer, if you can book before the 19th March. It will save you £30 on a return crossing - and the ferry is much cheaper than the tunnel unless you have Tesco vouchers to help towards the cost.

thanks val its defo the tunnel for us as we want dog to be with us we will suffer the cost lol and I think we have Tesco vouchers will look at all the things you mention I am a lorry driver so distance on the driving is not a problem its the dog for the stop overs will be back on here nearer the time thanks again

Dugie, A couple of things you should be aware of.
1. If you tow anything (regardless of weight ) in France with a Land Rover you will be restricted to 90 kph on motorways and 80 kph on non motorway roads. Sounds silly but it is their law. Presumably you are aware of the regulations applying to HGV'S and the same limits apply to Land Rovers when towing.
2. Similar restrictions apply to both speed and total unit length in Spain.
Suggest you have a look at the overseas section on the Caravan Club website. You do not have to be a member.
Both of these rules mean that you will need to plan for considerably more time for your journey.
As Val says, have a look at the ACSI website for suggested sites en route, take your time and enjoy the journey.

and dave I see you have a disco 3 that's on my list I have td5 at the moment 2000,i have been looking at both range rover sport and disco 3,with the rr most do not have the tow bar so have been looking at a 3 with all the toys how do you find it cheers doug

Hi again, Dugie.
I too had a td5. There is no comparison with the Discovery 3 !! It drives like a 'normal' car and one of the big advantages is that you can raise the suspension when you hitch up to make sure the jockey doesn't get trapped under the A frame.
Mine (second hand )came with a detachable tow bar already fitted. Doddle to attach and has its own dedicated stowage in the boot.
Tows my twin axle beautifully.

Thanks guys my td5 has the gizmo that lowers the rear up and down only thing so far I have had to fix was one airbag on the td5 on the Range Rover it also has a swan neck detachable tow bar I am still 50/50 on disco or range if it's the disco 3 it has to be leather not needed a five seater seems more Range Rover sports about cheers doug

Have you thought about the ferry from Plymouth to Santander? We have used it a few times now and although it seems teeth clenchingly expensive, when you work out what you would spend on channel tunnel or ferry plus tolls plus fuel plus overnight campsites to get down to Spain, the Santander ferry doesn't work out massively more expensive and we find that it is so much more relaxing than 2 or 3 days straight driving down through France.

We worked it out from our recent trip to Spain going through France that the Santander ferry was over £200 more expensive than the road trip and getting a dog friendly cabin was a non starter! That's an extra month in Spain to enjoy the sun and Sangria 😎

We can do a lot with the £237 saving, as well as having a nice drive through France instead of getting seasick

Hi Dugie, we have just booked the ferry to Bilbao for the end of May. It's our 40th wedding anniversary and we want to use the whole of June for a tour of Spain and Portugal. We have used this route before but never gone further than the Picos Europa and the Costa Brava.
We have bought the ACSI card and have some camping cheques from booking the ferry with the caravan club,so we're happy with the ferry but would appreciate some advice about good camping sites and general routes and areas of Spain that are a 'must' to see.
