I have had to book our yearly France holiday from the 8th August due to work!!
so the questions are:
what is the South of France like in August and
What are the Tolls like
We have a tag so we can use the quick lanes but was just worried about how busy its going to be.
Last year we set off last week in July and it was busy then at 8am in the morning.
Not sure I am going to look forward to this years holiday

The south gets really busy then and the tolls are OK until the weekend, so try and stay local then.

That is the same time as we are going. We went the same time last year and it was busy but probably not much busier than the last week in July. We also have a tag and it was invaluable definitely saves time but there are queues as this is the busiest time of year for the French. Can't speak about waterparks or theme parks but beaches were busy but always space and just need patience when queuing for ice creams and drinks but my lads are 18 and 22 not small children who get very bored waiting. I think the South where you are going will be busy July and August so just have to accept it and chill no rush you are on holiday. Enjoy it - we did and are going back we stayed just short of St Tropez.

We were in the south of France in August a few years ago and the biggest issue was not so much traffic on the motorways to get down there but traffic on the roads around the towns once we had arrived. It really depends on where you mean by the South of France. If you mean the South Coast around the Nice/Cannes/Frejus/St Tropez strip then traffic is chaos in August and there is no point in trying to go anywhere by car during the day. Took us 3 hours to travel 11 miles in the St Tropez area - never again! However if you don't plan to use the car much once you get there, you can put up with the traffic until you get to your site and then leave the car on site for the rest of the holiday and either use public transport or walk!

First 2 weeks of August, Paris goes to the beach. Most of the rest of France is still not too much of a problem.

Hello,
We only drive down to Bordeaux but we have been caught up in some traffic jams that have taken hours.
We now avoid travelling on on the main holiday weekend Saturdays or we travel part of the journey during the week and leave early to finish the journey on the Saturday mornings.
The Via michelin site has a page where you can put in the date of travel and then it can tell you where the main snarl ups are and at what time. I have also got a tag this year and I suspect that the website info there will also be able to give you travel advice.
We now always travel with too much water (some frozen) as twice we got caught up in the heat for hours and ran out of water.Mind you since then it hasn't happened again, but hey that's hindsight for you.
I have heard that the French take picnics to eat on the side of the motorways on some of the routes, but I am not sure how old that info is.

Yes. Don't expect to be able to get into an aire with a caravan during lunchtime on these days. Everywhere is full up and even getting around the aire is nigh on impossible at times! We have experienced this a couple of times and now aim to stop early (i.e. no later than 12) or late (after 2pm).
