Keith, I'm very partial to the Rhine, Mosel, Saar areas.
It's a fantastic, beautiful area for scenery, history, food and wine.
One useful feature is that it is all within the Rhineland Pfalz / Saarland district, so for about 28 Euro + 2 Euro / person, you can buy a 1 day rail that gives unlimited travel within the region. You could camp in say, Koblenz and then use the train to Mainz or Trier - jumping on/off as you chose to visit the riveside villages.

These places are relatively close to the channel ports, travel along the Belgium/France border, through Luxembourg, and you're there.

If you want to try a somewhat neglected country, I thoroughly recommend Belgium. Ypres & Kemmel are lovely places just over the border and Bruges is a lovely city.
The Ardennes offers lovely walking & scenery.

-------------
Two drifters off to see the world.

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.

We love the Mosel region. As you are in a motorhome there are Stellplatz ever 6 inches or so!!!

Some really lovely places to stop and very cheap.

I would recommend Wintrich for a couple or three nights. If you arrive early afternoon there is usually plenty of spaces left on the riverside.

Site wide free wifi. Electric hookups. Take a ticket on entrance and pay when you leave. Last year it was €9 per night (I think).

Short walk to the village for the supermarket. Boat picks up on the site for a trip to Bernkastel. Bus also available in village.

No chemist so have your headache tablets available in your first aid kit!

Clicky

We have enjoyed Bavaria most of all ... Munich is a great city, and the bottom half of the 'Romantic Road' is full of sensational towns and sites to see.
Check out my review of Camping Brugger.

Travelling from Nottm you may want to look at the Stena ferry crossing from Harwich to Hook of Holland. I found it compares favourably with the Dover routes. Is an easy drive from Nottm and cuts out the notorious M25

I would agree with the Rhine/Moselle area. Moselle can be a bit noisy with trains, barges and cars

Having been travelling to Germany for over 30 years the last 12 with a caravan I can give you a lot of info but far too much to mention in a post. Germany has a lot of fantastic areas each with their own features. The Mosel is pretty and less noisy than the commercial Rhine but still worth a visit. I expect you will have the ACSI Camping Card and I can give you a good route to Bavaria, Mosel, Rhine and Black Forest, if you would like to send me an email to dvphillips14:hotmail.com and which area you are interested in plus your length of holiday.
