We are planning a trip to the Italian lakes in May; probably Como and Maggiore, not Garda. Has anyone any observations on how busy sites may be? We're wondering whether many Dutch/Germans go there during their May one or two week school holidays?

We unfortunately don't have holidays in Spring in our region, so I can't tell from my own experience. The both southernmost countries of Germany (Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg) have two weeks of holiday and many, many travel to lago di garda.
I did a bit of research for you in a German camping-forum and found many threads about "Whitsun holiday" in combination with "lago di Garda" a few in combination with "lago Maggiore" and none in combination with "lago di Como".
No guarantee of course, but it seems to me, that if you avoid lago di Garda you should be fine - at least regarding the Germans.
Lake Garda is particularly busy during the German school holidays and sites are often full. We have even been put on the sports field to wait for a pitch. One way of telling might be a blip in the site fees or perhaps not accepting the ACSI Card.

Thank you for the replies. What an interesting way of trying to find an answer for us, Cologne. Hopefully we'll be OK . More likely to find lots of retirees like us, with our ACSI cards.
We've been in Italy during those weeks (and a couple of weeks either side) for the last few years. The ACSI sites around Garda will definitely be very full; we always try to arrive before these weeks begin to make sure of a pitch. This is what the Dutch seem to do... Otherwise arrive as early as you can.
In general the further you go from the Brenner route (which most Germans will naturally use) the easier it will be. Last year we were in Tuscany and had virtually no problem.
