Hi

Considering going tent camping with kids for first time in France. Fancy Brittany area.

I've been putting France off for ages as I'm a bit apprehensive of driving on he continent for first time I'd prefer a site not to far from San Malo port which is where I think we might take the boat to.

We'd appreciate advice on a good spec and not too commercalised family friendly site with nice facilities, good pitch sizes, and definately a pool and some activities for children. Would be good if it was a short distance from a town or village and maybe a beach.

Any recommendations will be welcome. We'd like to make this first trip a special one.. many thanks!

We discovered Matignon village and Camping Vallon aux Merlettes last summer, and someone else wrote a complimentary report on here as well as mine. Have a look at them.

It's about 20 miles west of St Malo ferry port, and about three miles from the sea, has all the campsite features you are asking for and is ideal for children under eleven - but doesn't have evening activities for teenagers, so it depends how old your children are. It might help you.

I think Berriow's site looks lovely and may tempt us back to Brittany. It's a good price, too, for a site with an indoor pool (essential for possible 'Northern France' weather!) because I love a morning swim.

Municipal Camping Du Pont De L Etang

Must put my review on. Completely missed it.   Kids will LOVE this site. No pool, but the beach is right there. Right there.   Reviews not too promising on here, but I would not review the same.

My visit was a Dads and kids week, 4 mates and our children, all tent camping. No other halves.

Camping Le Helles in Combrit Sainte Marine. In a great wee village, 10 mins to beach, indoor & outdoor pool and 10 mins drive to super U.
Get the ferry to Roscoff and an easy leisurely drive.

If the drive is too far, try a ferry to Roscoff and a quick 20 minutes to At klegeur in St Pol de Leon. Outdoor pool with flumes, at the seaside and walking distance to town.

Hello,
We have been on that route and have found staying outside of St Malo to be better.
We have stayed at a very nice campsite at Dinan, which is an amazing town with a river, very picturesque, and one at St Briac-sur-mer which was good for overnight ferry stops. The one at Dinan had facilities for holidays and children including a pool. The municiple above the ferry terminal is very noisy, with lots of vehicles coming and going.
There are some lovely, lovely beaches along the coast and I would reccomend going to Fort le Lat near Cap de Frehel, which has a lovely walk and then an interesting castle were they filmed the Vikings and you can go up on to the top of the turret (500ft) very awesome.
If you would like to use my discount code for your journey on Brittany ferries to St Malo you are most welcome, just email me on Suechick43 at googlemail.com.

Try Camping Longchamps Saint Lunaire near Dinan. Walking distance to beach and lovely town, market on Sundays. It was our first trip abroad about 6 yr ago. They put in a pool since then and the pitches are generous and staff helpful. Revisited for lunch last year and the town still looks good, was very tempted to pitch there again.

I would echo the comments about how relaxing the driving in France really is!
From the main Brittany ports of St Malo or Roscoff, the whole Brittany coastline is easily driveable. Camping du Letty is very popular with families and having seen the beach that it is next to, I can understand why! There are so many good campsites on either north or south coast though and Dinan is a beautiful town although I have no experience of sites in that area.

When we go back to Brittany it will be to Camping Les Embruns to explore a different part of the coast.
However Camping du Letty has been Fantastic and the best European site by a significant margin. We all Love it, and the area, especially the bakery at the top of the town.

We stayed at Camping du Poulquer at Benodet last summer, as we thought it might be a bit smaller and less `all singing and dancing` than Du Letty. It was a lovely site, with indoor and outdoor pools, and a bar area.
It was also a shorter walk to the main beach and town. I can certainly recommend it.

We are taking the tent across to France in the summer and have decided on Normandy for a number of reasons not least because our daughter is interested to learn about the whole WW2 thing.

We haven't been to the site before but we are going to Chateau de Lez Eaux which is just over an hour from St Malo. It gets very good reviews, looks like it has great facilities and most important to us is a quiet family site. Our daughter thinks it looks great because it has an indoor water slide complex as well as an outdoor pool. The pitches are big as well.

We are using the channel tunnel, less than half the price of the ferries and the additional driving time is about the same as being stuck on the ferry.

Driving in France is easy, lovely quiet motorways and it only takes a few minutes to get used to driving on the wrong side of the road! And for me is all part of the holiday, much better than being confined to the ferry.
